The Plateau People

The South- the weather is very dry and is desert like. The North- The air is moist, the land is lush and fertile.

The Northern terrain is surrounded by heavy woods. The Southern area (Low Lands) is more open fields and resemble sagebrush grasslands.

Pit houses were used during the winter months by the plateau people. (House built underground with a roof and a ladder coming out from the top.)

The Tipi was used during the spring/summer months by the Plateau people. (Built with wooden frames, and Tule (bulrush).) They got the idea of the Tipi from the plains people

Tule Mat Lodge is a summer home which is built above ground. They are very large and wide and it is built with the same stuff to build a tipi.

The Lean-tos were temporary shelters used by the Plateau people. Made out of poles and Tule brush mats.

The Plateau people travelled in many different ways: Ktunaxa sturgeon-nosed canoe Ktunaxa dugout canoe Ktunaxa saddle Nlaka’pamux snowshoes (for dogs) Nlaka’pamux snowshoes (for humans)

Tools that the Plateau people used were usually made of bone, wood, and stone. They were decorated with carvings, feathers, copper, and beads. The tools they used were: Ktunaxa dipper (serving food) Root digging stick Fish hooks (catch fish) Ktunaxa fish trap (catch fish) Three pronged fish spear (catch fish) Hide Scraper

The plateau people loved music, and loved dancing to the beat of the drum. Music was very important to the Plateau people. Drum shega-skah-hdah Flute

Each village had one or several leaders/chiefs. There is one main village/ or one family chief who inherited the role from their father.

They're was other chosen chiefs as well, used for different roles ( hunting, warfare, fishing, etc.) because of the abilities they had.

The plateau government is mostly democratic, all the men in the village get a say but the chief still makes the final decision.

Split up the class Half the class on one side, the other half on the other side. Each group chooses someone to play rock, paper, scissors. Winner gets to start the game. If you get the question right, your side gains a point. Whatever side has the most points at the end wins. (Rules will be further explained.)
