1 Duncan Campbell Scott b.1862 in Ottawa son of Methodist missionary grew up in small towns in Ontario and Quebec began work at Dept. of Indian Affairs at 17; stayed for 52 years became an accomplished pianist met Archibald Lampman in 1883 in civil service; introduced him to poetry and prose writing 1894- married an American concert pianist 1895 - only child, a daughter, born; died tragically at age 12. In 1929, Scott's wife died. Two years later he married fellow poet 30 years his junior

2 most successful at landscape poems style characterized by colourful imagery, vivid realistic atmosphere, descriptions of the cruelties and contrasts in nature, and themes of conflict between nature and man (narrative poems) travels with Indian Affairs provided materials for his writing
