2 Anorexia Nervosa (AN) Anorexia is a psychological illness, which has a destructive effect on the body. AN is characterised by low body weight of an individual.

3 Types of Anorexia Nervosa Restricting type: Most common form of AN. Includes: Restricting food intake; only eating one meal per day. Follow inflexible rules; some individuals may only eat foods of a certain colour. Maintaining a very low calorie count. Binge eating or purging type: Less recognised. An individual confines their food intake, but also performs a binge-eating habit or commences purging behaviour. Includes: Over-exercising. Misuse of laxatives. Self-induced vomiting.

4 Physical Effects - Reduction in weight - Stunting of height and growth - Dry skin - Low blood pressure - Anaemia (Iron deficiency) - Zinc deficiency - Tooth decay - Fainting

5 Psychological Effects - Distorted body image - Low self-esteem - Mood swings - Self evaluation based mostly on weight and physical appearance.

6 Behavioural Effects - Excessive exercise - Food restriction - Substance abuse - Self harm - Aggression - Overly sensitive, in reference to weight or appearance

7 Bulimia Nervosa (BN) A recurrent binge eating episode, followed by a compensatory behaviour. Some of which include: Vomiting Misuse of laxatives Over-exercising Diuretics

8 Physical Effects - Heart failure - Swollen salivary glands - Dehydration - Stomach and intestinal ulcers - Electrolyte imbalance; resulting in muscle fatigue - Bowel problems: constipation, diarrhoea

9 Psychological Effects - Anxiety - Depression - Fear of disapproval - Mood swings - Self isolation

10 Behavioural Effects - Fluctuations in weight - Frequent trips to the bathroom - Food avoidance - Fear

11 Binge Eating Disorder (BED) Exemplified by episodes of repeated binge eating without instantaneous compensatory methods.

12 Physical Effects - High cholesterol - High blood pressure - Osteoarthritis - Diabetes - Stroke - Irregular menstrual cycle - Skin disease - Heart disease - Kidney failure - Some cancers

13 Psychological Effects - Depression - Anxiety - Self harm - Low self-esteem

14 Behavioural Effects - Eating in secret - Eating when not physically hungry - Eating sufficient amounts of food in social setting, though purges when alone.
