2 Objectives 1. Analyze Shakespearean language for connotation and denotation of phrases. 2. Review verbs and verb phrases. 3. Determine the connotative meaning of words as they are used in a text; analyze the cumulative impact of specific word choices on meaning and tone. Homework: Vocab flashcards and Choosing the right word

3 Warm up Instructions:Copy the sentences. Circle the subject. Underline the verb phrases 2x in the following sentences. 1. My wife is reading in the hammock under the tree. 2. The message can't be altered. 3. Somewhere a party is being planned.

4 Vocabulary time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ◦ We will begin vocabulary lesson 5A today- ◦ We will go over each word and highlight the homework for the week.

5 Computer Time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ◦ Get the computers and complete the Verb Phrase worksheet.

6 Find the helping verbs and the main verbs in the sentences. Write HV about the helping verb, and MV above the main verb. 1.We are going to the mall tomorrow. 2.We have not finished our study of the solar system. 3.Everyone had quietly gone to bed. 4.It must have rained all night. 5.We are going out for dinner after the play.

7 Label Verb and subject. 1. Jason will play video games tomorrow. 2. The surgeon has operated many times before. 3. My little sister is singing like a rock star. 4. Scott can kick better than anyone on the team. 5. The beautiful sailboat was built in 1985. 6. Sarah is walking her puppy in the park. 7. Jake and his dad are using the computer. 8. Mom will bake special cookies for the party. 9. Tim had given his mother some flowers. 10. The very small girl can ski all by herself.

9 Today you will Partner read. Sit with your partner. Read and annotate. Look up words that are confusing. Friday we began Scene 67-70 At the end of the class you should be finished with Scene 2 70-72 You may come to the front for help if you and your partner have tried together to understand what is happening in Romeo and Juliet.

10 Closure 3, 2, 1 ◦ Write three things you learned about verb phrases ◦ Write two rules you need to follow to identify the phrases correctly. ◦ Write one question you still have about Romeo and Juliet.
