4 Buddhism: The Basics Created by Siddhartha Gautama around 563 BC in South Asia Siddhartha was a Hindu Buddhism and Hinduism share many beliefs but differ when it comes to some issues EX: Dharma & the Caste System Buddhists’ goal is to break the cycle of reincarnation, just in a different way than Hindus. 5 The Buddha Siddhartha Gautama – founder of Buddhism Born in India in 566 B.C. Was a Hindu Born into the Kshatriya caste Lived a wealthy but sheltered life Left his life behind and became an Ascetic GOAL: Wanted to understand why people suffer and how to minimize it

6 Buddha’s Enlightenment Buddha’s enlightenment led him to understand suffering. Buddha means “enlightened one” How to end suffering: follow the “Middle Way” Don’t go to extremes. He began preaching throughout South Asia. Buddhism was born - 500s BC His followers became known as Buddhists.

7 Comparing Buddhism & Hinduism Buddhists still believe in reincarnation, karma and dharma. Disagree on Dharma Hindus: Dharma is based on one’s caste. Buddhists: Dharma is based on the Middle Way. The Dharma Wheel of Buddhism
