Preface Read the preface and decide on your answers to the following questions. Then, click on the link to hear mine! –Who are these people who have written this book and its preface? –What’s a student? –Is this a book for ESL/EFL students? –What’s the LGSWE? Why does that matter to us?

Corpus examples & data Corpus = collection of “texts” “Text” = any sample of speech or writing What kinds of texts are used in this book? Why do you think those 4 were chosen? Why do they have so much to say about the ways that they work with their examples? What’s going on?

Grammatical abbreviations & the Glossary Look over the table of “grammatical abbreviations” on the page with the “abbreviations, symbols, and conventions.” Try thinking of an example for each. Which ones are a puzzle? Try the Glossary. If the glossary doesn’t help, try me! Write me at patbyrd@comcast.net if you want to ask about a particular term.patbyrd@comcast.net

Contents Look through the table of contents. –How many chapters does the book have? –What’s the general flow of the book? –What grammar is covered? What kinds of materials are given at the end of the book after Chapter 13? –On page 463, the verb write is in bold and has ** in front. What does that formatting tell you about that particular irregular verb? Compare the TOC to the Calendar of Readings for the course for the semester! –Where are we going?!

Now What? Read the chapter. Listen to and read my lectures on WebCT. Do the quizzes. Make notes about any of the information that might be important for your paper. Email me with your questions. Remember that I want to hear about what you do NOT understand…your questions about the parts of the chapter that confuse you.
