 WW1  17 million dead, 20 million wounded  Impact?  Great Depression  1929 – Wall Street Crash ends US loans to Europe  Unemployment rose throughout Europe  Impact? How might this impact foreign policy after the war? What did they learn? What do you think gov’ts care more about now: domestic or foreign policy?

 German Military cannot exceed 100,000  Germany cannot join with Austria  The Rhineland is de- militarized Why were these included in Versailles?

 1933 – Hitler asks the League of Nations that Germany should be allowed to rearm at the level of France  France disagreed – security  Britain agreed – avoid war and believed Germany had this right  Germany – Hitler leaves the League  1935 – Germany reintroduces conscription and begins building an air force Who might agree? Why? (Use the Picture) Germany Austria

 How can I answer the whole question  Break it down into smaller questions  Why would Hitler not follow the treaty of Versailles?  How did Hitler challenge the Treaty of Versailles from 1933~March 1938?  Why was he successful? Leave some space to put an outline Why was Hitler able to challenge the Treaty of Versailles from 1933 to March 1938? What parts of the treaty did Hitler wish to reverse? What did he do to challenge it? Why did no one stop him?

Essential Question Why was Hitler able to challenge the Treaty of Versailles from 1933 to March 1938? Learning Outcomes - Students will:  Preview – Hitler’s foreign policy  Learn about the context of the 1930s  Learn about the international reaction to Hitler’s demands Success Criteria I can answer my essential question fully

 Why was Hitler able to rearm?  How did the major European powers react?  Why was Hitler unable to take over Austria?  How did the major European powers react?

2 classes

 1935~36 – Abyssinian Crisis  Mussolini invades Abyssinia, killing 200,000 and using illegal weapons (Chemical Warfare) Hoare-Laval Pact – Britain and France agree to give land to Mussolini Why didn’t they take a tougher stand?  Once the public learns of this, Britain and France are forced to condemn Italy and impose sanctions  Impact – Stresa Front collapses What country are they from? Are they angry? Who is this? How does he react them?

 German Military cannot exceed 100,000  Germany cannot join with Austria  The Rhineland is de- militarized Why was this one included? Rhineland

 Hitler had planned to enter in 1938, but moved it up to 1936  Why?  7 March 1936 – German troops enter the Rhineland  German soldiers were ordered to leave the Rhineland immediately if the French sent troops  No French troops were sent Britain was unwilling to help France only prepared for a defensive war – Maginot line

 Context  The break up of the Stresa Front forces Italy closer to Hitler 1936 - Rome-Berlin Axis 1937 – Italy joins the Anti- Comintern Pact (Germany & Japan)  Spanish Civil War – France and Britain are focused there  March 1938 – Anschluss  Hitler is able to force the Austrian gov’t to “invite” German troops into Austria  April - A plebiscite is held where 99% of Austrians vote, approving the Anschluss

 You have broken down the question  You added to your outline last class  Could you add any more from today?  Write it  Since we broke it down into 3 questions, you should write 3 paragraphs  Due Monday, December 7 th 8:20am Why was Hitler able to challenge the Treaty of Versailles from 1933 to March 1938?
