2 We use variables in place of numbers that we don’t know. For example a number plus 5 is 35 – if I were to write this an equation I would write A+5 =35 I don’t know what the number 5 must be added to, so I call it a. You can use any letter you want.

3 Identifying key words First we need to be able to identify what words mean addition, subtraction..etc... Subtraction- difference, fewer, less, decreased Addition- increased, more, sum Multiplication- times, product, of Divide – quotient, divided, out of

4 examples Write an equation for each 1) a number increased by 3 is 45 2) The product of two numbers decreased by 7 is 34 3) 9 decreased by a number is -5

5 Word problems George has 7 more CD’s than Jean, together they have 56 CD’s
