Many Types of Line _________________straight lines/ horizontal ---------------------------- doted lines ))curved lines // diagonal lines Thick lines and thin Vertical lines Wavy lines Zigzag lines

Line Vocabulary Contour lines- outline of shape Hatched lines- lines in one direction Cross-hatched- lines in more than one direction Line quality- thick thin or weight of a line Line variation- length and width of a line Line texture- show line in forms of how something might feel. Shinny or rough Line direction- horizontal, vertical, or diagonal

Lines are used in Art It can define a space, create an outline or pattern, imply movement or texture and allude to mass or volume. Absolutely essential in creating art.

Examples of Line Used In Art Photography Architecture

Line Examples

Artist who use Line Bridget RileyVan GoghGeorgia O’Keefe

Directions At the top of the page write the word line using variations of line. At the bottom of the page write the definition of line. Draw a Contour line of an apple Divide the inside of the apple into 5 spaces fill the space with Zantangles that represent line. KEEP it NEAT and CLEAN Shade where it shows a darker area with your pencil.

Shape Shape is a closed line. Shapes can be geometric, like squares and circles; or organic, like free-form or natural shapes. Shapes are flat and can express length and width. 2-D

Types of Shapes Geometric Shapes are more man made like a square, circle, triangle, oval and rectangle. Organic Shapes are nature made like the shape of a puddle. These are more free flowing and organic.

Vocabulary Geometric Organic

How Shape is used in everyday life Buildings Furniture Logo Designs

Examples of Shape

Artist who used Shape Pablo PicassoAlexander Calder Wassily Kandinsky

Directions Draw the word Shape at the top of the page using only Shapes Write the definition at the bottom of the page Draw a variety of shapes both geometric and organic using your pencil Using more shapes overlap the first shapes filling in all of the page Use colored pencil to color in each individual shape.

Value The more light, the higher the the value. White is the highest or lightest value. On the other hand, black is the lowest or darkest value. Colors have value as well. Yellow for example has a relatively high (light) value, while violet has a relatively low value (dark). Going from light to dark gradually using one color

Vocabulary Gradation- gradually or slowly changing from one color to another. You want to have darks, medium, lights, and whites to create depth of making a 2-d image look 3-d. Value is very important to drawing and painting because value changes are what creates contrast. Contrast is needed to help us see and understand a two dimensional work of art. For example, if the was no value contrast between the words on this page and the background; you would have difficulty reading what is here. Value contrasts can also create interest in art works. Our eyes tend to be drawn to areas of high contrast, so artists use this to show us what they think is important.

Vocabulary Hue – another name for color Tint- color plus white Shade – color plus black Tone- color plus black and white Hatched lines – closer together create darker and further apart creates a lighter value Stipple- dots closer together create a darker value and further apart creates a lighter value

Value in the Real World Fashion Hair color Photography

Examples of Value

Artist that used Value

Artist Georgia O'Keeffe George Seurat Leonardo Di Vinci

Directions Write the word value at the top of the page using value. Example draw a V and shade it dark then an A and shade it medium….. Write the definition of Value on the bottom of the page Draw a value scale with 10 squares at a diagonal so it fits the page. Shade from light to dark using your pencil.

Form Form is a shape that has depth, length, and width and resides in space. It is perceived as three- dimensional.

vocabulary Configuration -arrangement of lines 3-D-three dimensional or has sides Perspective image appear 3-d –making a 2-d

Form in the Real World Sculpture DishwareToys

Form Projects

Form used by Artist Picasso Andy Warhol Rene Magritte

Directions Write the word form at the top and put the letters in perspective. Write the def. at the bottom Draw a robot using shapes in their 3-d form

Texture Texture refers to the tactile qualities of a surface To draw how something would feel if you could touch it. Visual texture is an illusion of texture created by an artist. Can be applied in painting, drawing, clay, and sculpture.

Vocabulary Actual texture- texture you can feel bumpy, smooth or hard. Glue on a feather Applied texture- the visual representation is when you draw some thing that looks bumpy, smooth or hard. Draw a feather that appears soft. Natural texture. It's the texture we find and it is not made by humans. For example: stones, sand, rice, etc. Artificial texture. It's the texture from things made by humans. For example: a pencil, a chair, a raincoat, etc.

Actual and Natural Textures

Applied Example Used in Art Soft Rough sharp edges

How is texture used in the real world Fabric Fonts Bumpy

Artist Who Use Texture

Directions Write the word texture using hatched lines, cross- hatched, value, diagonal lines and stipple. Write the definition at the bottom. Create a collage that contains both applied and actual textures like the one by Picasso. Find, Cut, Glue, and Draw

Color

Color Definition Color can be a pigment or generated The Quality of an object with respect to light reflected by the object.
