2 Sixth Grade: Ancient Cultures –Values - Beliefs -Rituals Conceptual Constructs Mission Statement: Our mission as Social Studies educators is to guide students on their journey to adulthood. With certainty, our subject is the best vehicle to influence students’ morals, to foster tolerance for all cultures and beliefs, and to practice decision making skills. Through intellectually stimulating experiences, students will explore the human condition and analyze the motives and consequences of past behavior. By understanding the past students will begin to realize that their individual actions or reactions not only impact their future, but the future of our diverse nation.

3 Your child will be scheduled for Social Studies The First & Second Marking Periods or The Third & Fourth Marking Periods During the other two marking periods he or she will have Science.

6 The Revised Curriculum Grading System A Student achieves 93-100 B Student achieves 85- 92 C Student achieves 84- 76 D Student achieves 70-75 F Student achieves 69 & below Weighted Grading Homework/ Classwork/ Agenda/ Effort – 10% Quizzes– 40% Tests/Projects – 50%

7 Daily Expectations Come Prepared & Organized to class Agenda book (with weekly bathroom pass) Writing Implement (Pen preferred) Notebook (Composition Book) Literacy Notebook Any projects or homework. PLEASE NOTE FOR THIS CLASS THERE IS NO STUDENT TEXTBOOK

8 With no student textbook How will you prepare for a test? In Class Pay attention during class & participate. Ask questions to help your understanding. Copy all notes carefully & study them. Make vocabulary flash cards. At Home Reread & Study your notebook. Create possible test questions & study them. Make flashcards & practice with someone.

10 During our Social Studies classes we will: Sing Read the classroom copy of the textbook with an audio tape Take Notes Participate in Discussions ( by asking questions & giving answers) Draw Map & Diagrams Complete Worksheets Write Paragraphs (Compare & Contrast, Persuasive) Research (Independent & Group) Watch Video / DVD Discoveries & Worksheets BATHROOMS: You have your bathroom pass (one girl and one boy are allowed to and sign out at a time). YOU ARE ADVISED NOT TO USE THE BATHROOM DURING READING, OR WHILE THE CLASS IS WATCHING A VIDEO.
