2. What is the Added Value Unit? The Added Value Unit is an important part of the National 4 course. It is marked as a Pass or a Fail. You will have to complete work for your Added Value Unit in school and at home.

3. How do I pass? In order to pass the Added Value Unit you will need to provide evidence of: Reading: by selecting relevant information from at least two straightforward texts Talking or writing: by using straightforward language in a written or oral presentation Listening: by responding appropriately to questions

4. Studying Short Stories When we study a short story in English, we think about: The themes The characters The setting Conflict or plot twists Literary techniques

5. What will my Added Value Unit be like? Your Added Value Unit will be based around the study of two short stories. You will be given access to a collection of short stories and you will choose the two stories you wish to focus on. Your Added Value Unit will take the form of either: A critical essay (700-800 words long) An oral presentation (4-6 minutes in length)

6. Recording my information You will be given a Learning Log by your teacher. This is a really useful way of recording your notes and keeping all of your research together. Your teacher will ask to see your Learning Log because it is evidence of the work that you have been doing in preparation for your Added Value Unit.

7. What should I do? This week, we will all study a short story together. You will take part in: Class discussions Group discussions Note taking activities

8. My Focus You will complete activities in class that will help you think about the story in more depth. As you write and discuss, think about: The genre of fiction you think you like best What you remember about a story after you have finished reading it? Is it the characters? The plot? The setting? How easy you find it to identify literary techniques in a story. Can you comment on their effect? What you could say about themes and how important you think theme is to a story.
