 A colony is a territory under the immediate control of another, distant nation or state

 The French and English followed Spain into the “New World”. Since Spain and Portugal had taken control of South and Central America, France and England focused on North America  France colonized much of modern day Canada and what we call the Midwestern United States today, while England colonized the Atlantic seaboard  France’s two main colonies were New France and Quebec (1608 ).  The French were primarily interested in developing a fur trade and focused much of their activities on fur trapping.

 Colonists developed an uneasy relationship with nearby Powhatan Indians.  Indians helped colonists survive, and Pocahontas (pictured) became a sensation in England  Eventually, the two groups went to war over land and resources  Indians were gradually pushed westward and later died out

 A rebellion that took place in Virginia in 1676  It highlights the class and race tensions that were present in Virginia and much of the colonies  Nathanial Bacon (pictured) and others, mostly indentured servants, were angry about Indian attacks in western Virginia and the colonial government’s lack of response.  Bacon led an army into Jamestown and briefly took over before he fell ill and died and the rebellion fell apart  After order was restored, the colonial government of Virginia began to look less and less at using indentured servants and more and more using African slaves.

 Religious unrest continued for years. Unrest led to Massachusetts losing its charter and being taken over by the King in 1684.  Trying to keep membership up, Puritans adopted a half-way covenant allowing children in the church who had not had a salvation “experience”  Weakening of religious unity helped lead to Salem Witch Trials in 1692, the worst witch hysteria event on American soil (19 people killed)

 As with Virginia, Indian relations were good at first, but got worse over time  Most Indians were killed or forced out of New England after King Philip’s War in 1675. Thousands of colonists and Indians were killed.
