1 Elements of Design Value and Color

2 Value Value is the relative degree of lightness and darkness in a design element. Line, color, texture, and shape all need value contrast in order to be seen. Value is used to describe objects, shapes, and space.

Analyzing Value Where is the light source? Do you see any highlights? How what techniques did the artist use to create darkest points of the image? What other elements are most predominate?

8 Color Color is the element of art that is produced when light, striking an object, is reflected back to the eye. There are three properties to color. The first is hue, which simply means the name we give to a color (red, yellow, blue, green, etc.). The second property is intensity, which refers to the vividness of the color.

13 Assignment – Speed Design!
Pick either color or value to create a quick design mockup in Illustrator. You have the remainder of the class to finish this. Post to your blog once you are finished

14 Line Lines and curves are marks that span a distance between two points (or the path of a moving point). As an element of art, line is the use of various marks, outlines and implied lines in artwork and design. A line has a width, direction, and length. A line's width is sometimes called its "thickness". Lines are sometimes called "strokes", especially when referring to lines in digital artwork.

20 Shape The enclosed lines are then transformed into another element of art called shape. Shapes are areas of enclosed space that are two-dimensional. Shapes are flat, and can only have height and width. The two different categories of shapes are geometric and organic.

26 Assignment – Speed Design!
Pick either line or shape to create a quick design mockup in Illustrator. You have the remainder of the class to finish this. Post to your blog once you are finished Make sure you are being mindful of the other elements of art while you create this This needs to be an artistic piece, I don’t want it to be a technical representation of the element You will pick your own dimensions that you believe is most suitable for the project

27 Elements of Design Space, Form and texture

28 Space definition Space is an area that an artist provides for a particular purpose. Space includes the background, foreground and middle ground, and refers to the distances or area(s) around, between, and within things. There are two kinds of space: negative space and positive space. Negative space is the area in between, around, through or within an object. Positive spaces are the areas that are occupied by an object and/or form.

29 Describe where the foreground, middle ground and background is

30 Describe how the artist uses positive and negative space

31 Describe where the artist place their foreground, middle ground and background AND positive and negative space.

32 form The form of a work is its shape, including its volume or perceived volume. A three- dimensional artwork has depth as well as width and height. Three-dimensional form is the basis of sculpture. However, two-dimensional artwork can achieve the illusion of form with the use of perspective and/or shading or modeling techniques.

33 What methods does the artist use to create form in these pieces
What methods does the artist use to create form in these pieces? What medium is the artist using for these pieces?

34 What two-dimensional element is featured on the right
What two-dimensional element is featured on the right? What three-dimensional element is featured on the left? What element creates form within this right baseball?

35 How does the artist create the appearance of form within these two dimensional shapes?

36 texture Texture is used to describe either the way a work actually feels when touched, or the depiction of textures in works, as for example in a painter's rendering of fur.

37 What skills or tools does the artist use to create texture graphically in this piece?

38 Describe the type of texture that the artist uses graphically in this piece How was it created?

39 What medium does the artist use to create texture within this piece
What medium does the artist use to create texture within this piece? Is it two-dimensional or three-dimensional?

40 Assignment – Speed Design!
