2. South Africa’s Greatest Leader Passes Away 南非前總統曼德拉逝世

4. Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president and “the founding( 建立 ) father of democracy( 民主 )” in his country, died at age 95 on December 5, 2013.

5. As a young man, Mandela fought against apartheid( 南非種族隔離政策 ). Under this system, blacks and other non-white racial( 種族的 ) groups in South Africa had few rights in their own country.

6. Mandela opposed( 反對 ) this and was tried for conspiracy( 謀反 ) against the government. He received a life sentence( 無期徒刑 ), and spent over 27 years in prison.

7. Due to his sacrifice( 犧牲 ), he became a hero to millions of people around the world. Eventually( 最後 ), South Africa felt the growing pressure to end apartheid, and Mandela was released( 被釋放 ) in 1990.
