1 SSUSH 12 The student will analyze important consequences of American industrial growth. Describe Ellis Island, the change in immigrants’ origins to southern and eastern Europe and the impact of this change on urban America.

3 IMMIGRATIO N Old immigrants from Northern and Western Europe [mostly Protestant Christians] came before the Turn of the Century [1607 – 1876] did NOT welcome New Immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe Who came at the Turn of the Century [1877 – 1920]

4 New Immigrants flooded the cities of America and lived in Ethnic Ghettoes - URBANIZATION

6 New immigrants lived in cities and worked in the new factories created around the new cities.

8 Identify the American Federation of Labor and Samuel Gompers. AFL – One of the most important labor unions in U.S. History – Worked for “Bread and Butter” issues – higher wages, safer working conditions, 40 hour work week – One of the biggest unions ever – joined Congress of Industrial workers to form AFL-CIO Samuel Gompers – One of the first leaders of the AFL – His popularity and success helped AFL grow in numbers – Stayed away for politics and concentrated on worker rights

11 Pullman Strike 1894 First Strike stopped by the Federal Government with troops and a court injunction Nationwide strike of the railroads, stopped travel across America – No letters mailed Example of the Federal Government siding with Big Business against Labor Unions

12 SSUSH 12 The student will analyze important consequences of American industrial growth. Describe the growth of the western population and its impact on Native Americans with reference to Sitting Bull and Wounded Knee.
