2 ACTIVITY: Get into a group of 4, in a minute You will complete 8 activities and your group will only have 5 minutes at each station to complete the task. Read the instructions at each station and complete the task as a group

3 STATION 1: PROS EDUCATED WORKED WITH MONEY BEFORE WORKED WITH PEOPLE AND PUBLIC OBVIOUS SIGNS OF A GOOD WORKER COMMITTED CONS HER LOOK IS “ORIGINAL” Does she need to be given the job? No she does not. The bank can ask her to change her appearance if she wants the job.

4 S TATION 2: PROS: Former police officer Experienced military man CONS: Older person Needs to be able to handle the assigned tasks Should he be given the job? Yes, he should be tested and if he can handle the situation he should be given the job.

5 S TATION 3: PROS: Educated in the field Experienced paramedic Young and fit CONS: None Should she be given the job? As long as she meets the physical requirements then she will be an excellent candidate

6 S TATION 4: PROS: Educated Already experienced Former police officer Dedicated Physically fit CONS: None Should he be given the job? He can still perform the tasks of the job without wearing the full uniform

7 S TATION 5: Pros: Experienced boy scout Knows the outdoors well Is a manager, so signs of responsibility Cons: None Should he be given the job? Absolutely, there is nothing holding this candidate back.

8 S TATION 6: PROS: Experienced server Dedicated Was a manager CONS: Was a manager and the stores closed Is male and this is for female positions Should he be given the job? No, he does not have to be given the job. He does not meet the bona fide occupational requirements for the job...being female.

11 W HAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS ? What do they mean? Who do they protect us against? What are some types of human rights that we have? Why is it important that we have these? How do these differ from the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?

12 G ROUP W ORK T IME : In groups, discuss whether these people should be forced to retire at age 65 or not...come up with a pros and cons list on a piece of chart paper to support your reasons and come up with a decision Choose one of the following: Airplane Pilot High School Science Teacher Baker Surgeon College Football Coach Police Officer

13 The Preamble (the intent of the code) states that we recognize that all people: Have human rights that cannot be infringed upon or dismissed Have individual dignity and worth Are entitled to equal rights and opportunities without discrimination Need a climate of understanding and mutual respect, so that everyone feels a part of society and can contribute fully to it

14 The Canadian Human Rights Actwas proclaimed in order to provide comprehensive human rights legislation to protect the rights of individuals. Human Rights include the right to receive equal treatment, to be free from prohibited discrimination and harassment, and to have equal access to places, services, and opportunities Protects us against each other Video: Don't Discriminate

15 H ISTORY Was passed in 1977 Applies to: Federal government departments Crown corporations All business and industries under the jurisdiction of the federal government Example: postal workers, chartered banks, airlines

16 D ISCRIMINATION : Occurs when someone is treated unfairly because they are a member of a particular group Ex. Muslim or Asian or the Disabled What is Diversity? 17 ... CONTINUED It used to be a major problem in the world of sports, particularly in college and pro football Video: Black Head Football Coaches Why do you think it took so long...really up to the early 2000’s for black coaches to get a chance at head coaching positions?

18 Discrimination is based on: Race National or Ethnic Origin (where you are from) Colour Religion Age Sex Sexual Orientation Mental or Physical Disability Family or Marital Status Pardoned Criminal Conviction Video: Equality Video

19 T HE P ROGRESSION : People are generally not discriminatory outright. Discrimination is often based on a progression which takes place that brings a person to discriminatory practices There are 3 steps

20 1) S TEREOTYPES : Stereotyping is an oversimplified, false, or generalized portrayal of a group of people What happened when we drew the pictures? It involves taking a characteristic of one member of a group and applying it to all members of that group. Ex. All teenage males are reckless drivers or old people take a lot pills This is usually harmless Video: Irish Stereotype

21 ... CONTINUED Do we all do this? Why do you think this is and how do we get these perceptions? Watch the following video clip and see how many stereotypical ideas you see...raise your hand every time you see one Video: The Office...basketball Video: The Office...basketball

22 H OW ABOUT THIS ??? GROUP WORK Video: 7 - Eleven Stores Do you think that this is discriminatory or that this is just playing off of stereotyping and is harmless? What do you think would make this a discriminatory practice? Do you think that the 7- Eleven store practices is appropriate or not? Explain.

23 2) P REJUDICE : A belief in stereotypes can result in prejudice Hatred towards a person because of a stereotype Still relatively harmless This is generally kept to themselves and only affects their own individual lives

24 3) D ISCRIMINATION : Discrimination involves putting prejudice into action Most serious stage By acting upon your prejudice you are now impacting the lives of others. Ex. Not serving someone in a restaurant because of their disability

25 P UTTING IT ALL TOGETHER : Now that you have this preconceived notion (a stereotype ), and actually believe that this negative assumption is true of all people within this category (a prejudice ), and now you are affecting others around you by putting this belief into action ( discriminating ) by not hiring someone because of their sexual orientation

26 O NTARIO H UMAN RIGHTS C ODE Dates back to 1962 Inspired by the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights Major changes in 2008, which include: Ontario Human Rights Commission Identifies causes of discrimination, helps to bring about change Human Rights Legal Support Centre Helps people who file applications with the Tribunal Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario Where you can go to file a complaint if you think your rights have been violated
