4 History Curiculum in Croatia I In Elementary school: - Nature and Society (age 6 – 10) - History (subject) 2 x 45 min/ week 5th grade – prehistoric and antique period 6th grade – mediaeval and new-age period 7th grade – from the end of 18th century – WW1 8th grade – 1918–2000 In High school: - depends on type of school ( 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 years studing)

5 History Curiculum in Croatia II The main goals of teaching History in schools: by using selected topics to develop knowledge and intelectual skills that will help students to understand modern world to develop interest for researching History to develop historical opinions and judgement to introduce different historical interpretations to comprehend basic values of modern global society to develop critical understanding about world, preparation for living in democratic and pluralistic society to develop students competitions: understanding, analysis, appliance, evaluation, creativity

6 History Curiculum in Croatia III - Children with specific needs - Difficulties in school procces: (minimal competitions) - adapted programme - individual programme - extra help in school - instructions at home Talented students: - extra programme in school - advanced programme - history student groups - acceleration in education School programm on languages of minorities (Serbian, Czech, Italian...)

7 Teaching History in school Regulated by Ministry of Science, Eduaction and Sport School curiculum includes: - integrated teaching (2-3 subjects on one topic) - school projects, open-school days - outdoor classes and field work (archeological and historical sights, museums...) - school cooperation and interworking - cooperation with local community
