2 What are the arrows pointing towards?
1. Arctic Circle 2. Tropic of Cancer Northern Hemisphere points away from the sun 3. Equator Northern Hemisphere pointed towards the sun 7. Winter 4. Summer 5. Tropic of Capricorn 6. Antarctic Circle

3 Understanding the previous slide
Direct rays of sunlight strike the Earth between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. When direct rays are striking the Tropic of Cancer, the Northern Hemisphere has summer. When direct rays are striking the Tropic of Capricorn, the Northern Hemisphere has winter. Direct Rays are over the equator during spring and fall.

4 Length of Day • Because the Earth is tilted on its axis, the length of daylight varies depending on the Earth’s location around the sun. • During the winter, days are shorter in the Northern Hemisphere than in the Southern Hemisphere. • During summer, days are longer in the Northern Hemisphere.

5 Seasons • Dark areas show night.
• Each picture represents the Earth 3 month later. 2. March 21 1. Spring 3. Winter • The Earth is always tilted towards the sun. • When the Northern Hemisphere points towards the sun it is summer. 5. December 21 4. June 21 • When it points away from the sun it is winter • When its summer in the Northern Hemisphere it is winter in the Southern Hemisphere. 6. Summer 8. Fall 7. September 22

6 Day-Night • Dark shading represents night.
• Unshaded area facing sun represents day 1. Night 2. North Pole • Arrow shows Earth rotating in a counter clockwise direction. 3. Day • The time at point B is noon. 4. Sun • The time at point A is 6am. 5. Equator • The time at point C is midnight. 6. South Pole • Point A is in the Northern Hemisphere.

7 • At position A, days are short in the Northern Hemisphere
B • At position A, days are short in the Northern Hemisphere C • At position C, days are long in the Northern Hemisphere. A • At position B and D, days and nights are approximately equal. D • It takes days to travel one revolution around the sun. A circle is This means Earth travels approximately 1 degree per day. • From A to B = 3 month • From A to C = 6 months • From A to D = 9 months • From A to A = 12 months • Dark areas = night
