SERVICE

Everybody can be great… “If you want to be important—wonderful. If you want to be recognized—wonderful. If you want to be great—wonderful. But recognize that he who is greatest among you shall be your servant. That's a new definition of greatness. …by giving that definition of greatness, it means that everybody can be great, because everybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve. … You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love. And you can be that servant.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. excerpt from “The Drum Major’s Instinct” speech

“A day on, not a day off” In 1983 the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was designated a federal holiday In 1994 the federal government designated the holiday to be the first, and only, national day of service

Why serve on MLK day? “The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life and teachings into community action that helps solve social problems. That service may meet a tangible need, or it may meet a need of the spirit. On this day, Americans of every age and background celebrate Dr. King through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers, and create solutions.” www.mlkday.gov

You can be that servant… For more information on getting involved visit: www.mlkday.gov There you can find an event or create one of your own and invite people to join you
