Talent 21 Project By Christian Rocco Date May 7, 2012 Period 4 SUNFLOWERS AND ACID RAIN

 The purpose of this experiment was to find out the effect of water or acid rain by improvising with tap water and vinegar water.  The control in this experiment was the tap water  The variable in this experiment was the vinegar water INTRODUCTION

 Plastic cup  super growing pellets  Triple beam balance scale  Sunflower seeds  Water  Ruler  Data sheet MATERIALS

1.Add super growing pellets to cup. 2.Add 3 tablespoons of water to expand. 3.Plant 3 seeds per cup. 4.Weigh cup on triple beam balance. Record weight. 5.Add tap water or vinegar water to cup. Weigh again and record data. 6.Cup will be placed under grow light. 7.Observe the container daily and note any indications of growth(by observations and measurement) and compare to other containers in the experiment. While observing indicate any special care given to the plant. (Did you need to add more or less water? Did you need to rotate the plant?) 8.Record observations, measurements, and comments in the plant growth diary. Once the plant begins to grow, you will need to draw a detailed picture of the plant including the appearance of leaves and stems. 9.Each day, repeat steps 3 through 8. METHODS

 Ask a Question  State Your Hypothesis  Identify Control & Variable  Test Your Hypothesis  Collect & Record Your Data  Interpret Your Data  State Your Conclusion SCIENTIFIC METHOD

 The purpose of this experiment was to find out what vinegar water would do to a seed. We also tried to find out how fast it would grow by comparing it with tap water.  My question: What will accelerate the growth of plant, tap water or vinegar water? ASK A QUESTION

 If I plant a sunflower seed in tap water it should be able to grow faster than vinegar water because I believe that the vinegar water will kill the plant our effect the growth of it. STATE YOUR HYPOTHESIS

 The control was the tap water that was used to represent regular water.  The variable was the vinegar water that was used to represent acid rain. IDENTIFY CONTROL & VARIABLE

 If I add tap water to my sunflower seed, then it will grow more than the vinegar water because the vinegar water should kill the plant. TEST YOUR HYPOTHESIS

COLLECT & RECORD YOUR DATA

 DateDry Wt.Wet Wt.DifferenceHeight  Day 175.0079.004.000.00 0 cm  Day 260.0061.001.001.00 1 cm  Day 350.0057.007.001.00 1 cm  Day 446.0053.007.002.00 2 cm  Day 550.0050.500.502.00 3 cm  My data would show that I had the right amount of water to have a plant grow. INTERPRET YOUR DATA

 The results of this lab did not support the initial hypothesis because the vinegar water had accelerated the grown of the plant and the tap water did not.  Some things that were learned from this experiment were that I should have not doubted the vinegar water and that I should have given the plant more sunlight. CONCLUSION
