3 Sicily fell quickly, but thousands of German troops escaped to Italy Allied forces landed in Italy in September 1943 and moved northward Italy surrendered in September 1943 but Canada and our allies continued to fight the Germans on Italian soil

4 Christmas 1943 Germans blocked to route to Rome at Ortona, a medieval fortress town Canadians were given the task of capturing it

5 Challenges – the Germans had blown up all bridges in the area and had the advantage in the steep countryside Two days after Christmas, Canada captured Ortona

6 Significance: A new type of warfare – urban, in close quarters Statistics: 96 000+ Canadians served in Italy 26 000 casualties Nearly 6 000 fatalities
