Bicycle & Pedestrian Safety on Campus Randolph Dillon English 106 August 4, 2003

Purdue’s Transportation Infrastructure Walking on Purdue University’s campus can be dangerous. Commuting is not easy and safe as it should be. The campus streets and sidewalks are too congested. This makes it unsafe for pedestrians and bicyclist.

Causes The sidewalks and streets are too crowed. Poor motorists awareness. Poor bicyclist and pedestrian awareness. Not enough room for pedestrian and cyclist to safely pass each other.

Types of Accidents caused by lack of awareness The vehicle fails to stop completely causing a crash with the cyclist in the intersection.

What if this vehicle were a City bus? I have witnessed this type of scene too many times at Purdue, but with City busses. The bus driver fails to give the cyclist enough warning before it get too close. This can startle the cyclist and cause major accidents.

Personal Encounter I have been in this situations many of times at Purdue. Even though I was aware of the vehicle, the motorists probably was not aware of me.

Civil Engineering Department The solution I am proposing is to implement a campus-wide bicycle path. I feel that this is the best solution for this problem because is addresses the concerns of the commuters. The path can separate motorists, pedestrians and cyclist, so that they are commuting on their own pathway.

How can this be done? This solution can be taken on as a project for undergraduate or graduate students in the school of Civil Engineering. This can give them experience and In turn help make the campus safer for commuters. If this solution is found not feasible, it can still give students experience in planning, an in turn alternative solutions can derive from taking on this project.

Money Funding for this project can be raised in fundraiser or along with the “The Campaign for Purdue.” While I have no experience in planning, I feel that determining cost will be included in planning the path by the Civil Engineering Department.

Final Thoughts I feel that implementing my solution is a very effective way to increasing safety for pedestrians and bicyclist commuting on campus. Building a campus wide bike path can add to the beauty of Purdue and make it even more distinguishable among college campus’s around the nation.

Thank You!
