1 5.14 ELEMENTS OF HUMOR (Level 3 Unit 5 - Hyperbole)

2 Focus  Today you will have 5,000 questions to answer.  You will have 1,000 pages of reading to do for homework.  Tomorrow in class you will write a 20 page essay.  How did you know I wasn’t serious?

3 Purpose  To recognize hyperbole and analyze its effects  To develop original examples of hyperbole to create a humorous text

5 Looking Back…  Look at the poem “Is Traffic Jam Delectable?”  Working in partners, mark the use of hyperbole by the author.  Next discuss how hyperbole creates a humorous effect in the text. We will share these thoughts in 5 minutes.  Be sure to take notes in the “My notes” section on the poem.

6 Examples…  My dog is so big he  My cat is so smart that  She was so funny that

7 For Your Portfolio…  On your own paper, create an anecdote or poem using at least 3 instances of wordplay (hyperbole, puns, one-liners) to create humor.  Select one example of word-play and create an illustration to accompany your poem.
