Chapter 7 Unit 4- Becoming a World Power Crash Course Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfsfoFqsF k4

Why did the United States seek to become an imperialist power?

Imperialism Is the economic and political domination of a strong nation over weaker ones The Strong overtaking the weak

Why did Americans want to expand? Beginning in the 1800’s: 1. A desire for new markets- new places to sell goods (more money) 2. Military- build a large powerful navy 3. cultural superiority (we are better than other countries)

1. New Markets Europe already imperialistic: -factories need more raw materials- find them in other countries -high tariffs causes countries to decrease trade with each other- had to find other markets or countries to sell goods in Europe became creating colonies in Asia and Africa - Some times allowed a protectorate- where the imperial power (strong country) let the local rulers stay in control and they protected them from rebellion and invasion

New Markets: America took notes of Europe’s example U.S. was expanding only in North America (Manifest Destiny) But.. Once the U.S. had settled the western frontier, it seemed natural to expand overseas

2. Feeling of Superiority Social Darwinism comes into play— O Nations compete with each other politically, economically, and militarily—only the strongest will survive. Anglo-Saxonism- Idea by John Fiske O English speaking nations have better character, ideas, and government systems O Therefore Manifest Destiny should go beyond the Pacific and extend overseas

3. Military Americans became increasingly willing to go to war for their own interests O This sparked the need for a large-modern navy American feared that if we did not create a modern navy with bases overseas, we would lose markets to Europe. (we are in competition-social Darwinism)

Manifest destiny: where do we go next?

Perry opens Japan O Japan did not want to trade with U.S., they thought it would hurt their culture O President Millard Fillmore sends Matthew C. Perry to negotiate with Japan and force them into trading O Helps spark a Japanese Industrial Revolution

U.S. Annexes Hawaii O U.S. needed ports to refuel when traveling to Asia. O Made a relationship with Hawaii by not charging them tariffs on sugar sold in the U.S. O As farmers in got richer from selling good in the U.S. they demanded more say in government. O Queen Liliuokalani disliked U.S. influence and wanted to reestablish her authority. O With the help of the U.S. Marines, the farmers overthrew the queen O Hawaii then asked to be annexed by the U.S.

Where to next? Latin America

U.S. and Latin America O U.S. now looks to the south - They buy raw material from them but most countries in L.A. buy their manufactured goods from Europe. - So, the U.S. wants a relationship to open up markets to them and dominate the region Pan-Americanism- Idea that Latin America and the U.S. should work together

Quick Write O In paragraph form explain how the Unites States moved away from isolationism to imperialism. You may use your notes. O With in your answer please include the following words: O -isolationism O -imperialism O -new markets O the navy O Cultural superiority O Annexation of Hawaii O Pan-Americanism O Turn this into the basket when you have finished

U.S.S. Maine Explodes- “Remember the Maine” 4. President McKinley is called “weak” by the Spanish Ambassador 5. Jingoism- strong nationalism felt by republicans America proclaims Cuba as independent then Spain declares war on America

War fought on two fronts War fought in the Philippines(another Spanish colony) and Cuba

End of the War Treaty of Paris Ends the war 1. Guam and Puerto Rico would be added as territories 2. Cuba Gains its independence 3. U.S. pays 20 million for the Philippines Platt Amendment--In reality Cuba is a protectorate under the U.S. where the imperial power (U.S.) let the local rulers (Cubans) stay in control and they protected them from rebellion and invasion https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfsfoFqsFk4https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfsfoFqsFk4 (crash course start at 4:57) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfYxr5s488shttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfYxr5s488s (15 min long )

China v. Japan O War was over Korea in which China owned O Japan quickly defeated China Result: -Korea gains independence -Japan gains Manchuria Territory Russia did not like this- they forced Japan to give Manchuria back to China and then forced China to lease the land to them

Spheres of Influence other European countries follow Russia’s lead and had “leaseholds” in China

Roosevelt Corollary O Roosevelt stated- the U.S. will intervene in Latin American affairs when necessary to ensure stability in the western hemisphere O Extension of the Monroe doctrine letting Europeans know they should stay out of the Western Hemisphere!
