9-11 NOVEMBER MARÍA M. SÁNCHEZ MARTÍN CÉSAR LÓPEZ SANTOS SPAIN

BIOLOGY LESSON PLAN BLOOD CIRCULATION LIQUIDS

SOME INTERESTING FACTS UNIT; CIRCULATORY SYSTEM SUBJECT: BIOLOGY STUDENTS: 14-15 YEARS OLD CLASS DURATION: 60 MINUTES

AND THE END OF THE CLASS WE EXPECT STUDENTS… RECOGNIZE BLOOD AS A LIQUID. IDENTIFY BLOOD COMPONENTS. DEDUCE HOW THE BLOOD MOVES AROUND THE BODY DUE TO THE PRESSURE IN THE VESSELS. KNOW THOSE WHO DISCOVERED THESE THEORIES: PASCAL AND TORRICELLI.

They take place in the Biology lab which is equipped with the following materials for these activities: Microscope connected to a digital camera. Teacher computer Smart board. A computer or similar for each student

Observation and Analysis Activity: (Duration: 20 minutes) Teacher will prepare a sample of blood to be analyzed with the students at the microscope with the help of the smart board. Students don`t know which substance is being used. Students must answer some questions about this liquid composition. (You can see these questions in the lesson plan). At the end students should discover what liquid is this and they have to make an interactive activity in our virtual campus about blood composition. ACTIVITY 1

VIRTUAL CAMPUS (IF YOU WANT TO ENTER IN THE CAMPUS, PLEASE ASK US FOR THE KEYS). http://aulavirtual.educa.madrid.org/ies.elolivo.parla/mod/forum/vi ew.php?id=4755

ACTIVITY 1

ACTIVITY 2 Pressure differences in a liquid. Heart function. (Duration 25 minutes) We will project a few slides about the heart function and also about how the difference of pressures in liquids explains how the blood goes into and out of the heart. We can see here some slides of the power point presentation (IF YOU WANT THE COMPLETE PRESENTATION, PLEASE ASK US FOR IT) https://www.dropbox.com/s/pygi4jeew9ykzv7/BLood %20pressure%20slideshow.ppt?dl=0

ACTIVITY 2 Cardiovascular system Volume pumped - The heart pumps an average volume of 0.073litres/beat. - An average heart beats around 72 times per minute. - Estimations give a value of around 5 litres of blood per woman while men have around 6 litres. - All this blood is pumped every minute. You can estimate the quantity of blood your heart moves during your whole life in this link http://www.csgnetwork.com/heartblo odvolcalc.html CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

ACTIVITY 2

Then students answer in common an interactive questionnaire to check if they have understood correctly all the new concepts. http://www.vtaide.com/png/blood-mcq.htm At last, the teacher will tell them about Pascal and Torricelli and how their works explain the liquids behavior. The students will look for some information about then in their personal computers.

ACTIVITY 2

ACTIVITY 3 Brainstorming (Duration: 15 minutes) Students will share the unit main conclusions in their computers and all their ideas will be shown together in the smart board using : www.evernote.com We will discuss on the conclusions and which ones are the most important. At the end of the class the teacher will sum up the main points and the class will finish. Students will have to tidy up the lab.
