SESPC Awards Subcommittee Joe Chambliss

10 Charter The Awards Subcommittee is responsible for candidate nomination and selection of the best paper award at conferences or workshops sponsored by the AIAA SESPC. The Awards subcommittee is responsible for candidate nomination for ICES related awards such as the ICES award as well as identification of appropriate AIAA awards that support this conference and this committee. The subcommittee will be responsible for recommending committee awards such as cash prize for outstanding students at the Student Poster Competition held at the annual ICES conference This subcommittee shall recommend to the PC elected officers methods to raise funds for awards such as using funds provided to the PC by AIAA and through short courses and workshops

2015 ICES Award Nomination Notable contributors to ICES from the SESPC are -Cesare Lobscio – Alenia – 22 papers (as Prime) Status of participation in 2015 ICES? -Jentung Ku – NASA GSFC – 15 papers -Jose Rodriguez – JPL – 13 papers Also co-author many papers and chaired many sessions -Jennifer Miller – JPL – 12 Papers Also co-authored several papers and organizes sessions -Joe Gasbarre – NASA LaRC – 8 papers -Greg Quinn – UTAS – 8 papers Contributor to many papers as co-author and chairs many sessions -Jeff Farmer – Past ICES Chair and Led many ICES activities Now eligible to be nominated - no longer a voting steering member Ineligible - Tom Leimkuhler, Wes Ousley, Joe Chambliss 11

12 Goals and Objectives Student poster competition Involvement -SESPC should participate and nominate a committee member to participate in paper judging The Jefferies award is a product of the AIAA LSSTC – should the SESPC influence that selection? Other AIAA awards – are there others that the SESPC should contribute to nomination for or selection of nominees?

13 Membership Chair – Joe Chambliss -Who else wants to participate in identifying awards that the SESPC should contribute to nomination and selection -For panels of the ICES should AIAA SESPC participate in nominating then selecting panel members?

SESPC Education & Outreach Subcommittee Hume Peabody

15 Charter The Education and Outreach Subcommittee is responsible for developing educational and outreach strategies, tools, and materials for the PC membership, AIAA, industry, academia, federal government, and the general public It also supports the ICES student poster competition by providing contest topics and judges The subcommittee promotes and conducts education activities and develops specific items (short courses, conference seminars, tools and materials, etc.) to increase AIAA member and public awareness, education, policy maker interest, and professional knowledge of Space Environmental System technology development

16 Goals and Objectives Establish Contact with NESC Passive Thermal Discipline Fellow (Steve Rickman - JSC) -Steve typically relies on his team to solicit/present 4+ Webinars on passive thermal topics per year -ICES papers represent an untapped source of high quality papers/ presentations that have already been cleared for public distribution -Spoke with Steve at TFAWS regarding cross-pollination and he responded favorably Assuming that copyright issues do not prevent re-broadcast (Discussed with Tom Leimkuehler who got a green light from ICES Steering Committee) Authors/presenters consent to being recorded -Recommend polling SESPC members who attended ICES for their lists of best papers and paring this down to 3-4 consensus possibilities and then contact authors to gauge interest

17 Goals and Objectives What is the availability of ICES papers after the conference? -In the past, AIAA “Sold” papers to interested parties -Does the new management wish to make these papers freely available on the Internet? -Is there a public website or server that could host? -What happened to papers from 2014? Are they accessible publicly? Privately? -Would Texas Tech maintain a repository of the papers for download? -Should papers only be available to attendees that year? -Quick Google search for one paper only yielded hit in the Program. This many papers not being available represents a substantial potential knowledge loss over time…

18 Membership Chair – Hume Peabody (GSFC) -Eric Sunada (JPL) Eric is on NESC Passive Thermal Technical Discipline and is responsible for organizing Webinars -Brian O’Connor (MSFC) -Ruth Amundsen (LaRC) declined to join -Anyone else who the committee thinks would be good?

19 Path Forward Collect listing of consensus “Best” Papers from 2014 ICES (in Thermal Discipline) to provide as possible Webinars Contact Authors and NESC Technical Panel Topic Suggestion: How is Technical Knowledge Preserved for the Next Generation? -How do various organizations (NASA, ESA, Other Space Agencies, Industry, etc) preserve their technical know-how to prevent the next generation from having to “Re-invent the Wheel”?

SESPC Membership Subcommittee Brain O’Connor

21 Charter This subcommittee is responsible for canvassing academia, industry and government to solicit membership in the AIAA SESPC for the purposes of promoting the ICES Conference and other AIAA sponsored activity by the SESPC.

22 Goals and Objectives Poll each of the members on any goals they have. Use the current membership list to assess the diversity and see if there are any areas that we need to work on. -Some metrics I’m thinking about are: region (USA, Europe, etc), gov’t vs industry, NASA center. -Any others?

23 Membership Chair – Brian O’Connor The following signed up as interested in participating, still need to contact each and confirm. -Andrea Ferrero -Gaj Birur -Matteo Lamantea -Jose Rodriguez

24 Path Forward Confirm with members their interest and gather their goals. Assess diversity of current membership

SESPC Publications & Website Subcommittee Jen Miller

26 Charter The Publications and Website Subcommittee prepares and publishes articles, assists with AIAA and other periodicals, prepares the annual summary on Space Environmental System technology for publication in Aerospace America, and conducts public relations activities to promote the advancement of Space Environmental System technology utilization, as needed. This subcommittee is also responsible for soliciting papers for publication in AIAA and other journals, as well as providing technical reviewers for such journals upon request. This subcommittee will also coordinate the development of position papers for publishing by the AIAA, as appropriate. The AIAA SESPC website is developed and maintained by this subcommittee

27 Goals and Objectives Upload documents to the AIAA website -Ensure members have access Prepare Aerospace America publication -All credit given to Brian O’Connor Support additional publication work

28 Membership Chair – Jen Miller -Brian O’Connor: publication only -Other volunteers for any future publication work

29 Path Forward Finish updating current membership list Have collected documents -Meeting minutes -Charter update -Agendas -Subcommittee updates Support publication if needed (Brian) Understand potential for future AIAA publications
