3 Introducing the Atoms: < -- Silver sulfide (Ag2S) or, tarnished silver <-- Dihydrogen oxide (H2O) or, water Sodium bicarbonate -- > (NaHCO3) or, baking soda Black = C, Red= O, Grey= Na & White= H Aluminum metal -- > (Al) Reactants:

4 What Happens? --> + + Silver Sulfide Aluminum Metal Silver Metal Aluminum Sulfide With the help of the baking soda dissolved in water, the sulfide (tarnish) gets transferred from the silver to the aluminum, leaving the silver metal looking like new. This process is an example of Single Displacement

5 Products: < -- Silver metal (Ag) Aluminum sulfide -- > (Al2S3) or, tarnished aluminum + Dihydrogen carbonate -- > (H2CO3) + Sodium hydroxide (NaOH) or, baking soda dissolved in water AND…

6 Recap: To get rid of the tarnish on the silver, the baking soda is added to the water and mixed around so that the baking soda gets dissolved in the water This way, when the aluminum foil and tarnished silver are added to the mixture, the tarnish gets transferred to the aluminum foil But who cares? It’s only aluminum foil The equation for this process is Ag2S + Al -- > Ag + Al2S3 This is also an example of a Single Displacement equation
