Goal-Setting The Bay Method Bay Tutoring

In this lesson  Why set goals?  SMART goals  Using our method  Set yourself some goals!

Why set goals?  Research has shown that goal-setting is linked to enhanced motivation (Elliot & Harackiewicz, 1994)Elliot & Harackiewicz, 1994  Setting yourself goals gives you something to work towards  It also helps you achieve!

Look out for…  Your goals must meet the SMART criteria (see next slide)SMART criteria  You have to review your goals regularly and check up on your progress  When you reach a goal, set a new one!!  Think long-term as well as short-term  Our method addresses this

SMART goals  Specific  Measurable  Attainable  Relevant  Time-constrained  For more information, go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria  http://www.goal-setting-guide.com/smart-goal-setting-a-surefire- way-to-achieve-your-goals/ http://www.goal-setting-guide.com/smart-goal-setting-a-surefire- way-to-achieve-your-goals/

The Bay method

The 1-2-3 pyramid  The basis of the method is the 1-2-3 system for setting goals  Start off by setting one big, overarching goal that you aim to achieve  Break this goal down into two smaller goals  Further break these down into three small goals  Progress bar

Explanation: 1  Your one big goal should be challenging and take time to complete  Set this goal first  All your other goals build up to this goal  Think about what you really want to achieve and make sure your goal supports that

Explanation: 2  Your two smaller goals break down your big goal into smaller, more manageable pieces  These goals should take less time to achieve and be stepping stones to your main goal  It is important to make sure that these goals support your main goal and will help you on your way to achieving it

Explanation: 3  The 3 small goals make up the base of the pyramid  They are the foundations the pyramid is built on  They are more about the day-to-day ‘how’ of achieving your bigger goals  They can be routines, behaviours, or processes that will set you up to reach your bigger goals  Think about what behaviours or routines would help you work towards your bigger goals

Explanation: progress bar  You can use these bars to help measure your progress visually  As you progress towards reaching each goal, colour in part of the progress bar  Each level of the pyramid has a progress bar at the bottom

Example: Running a marathon

A final note  Your 1-2-3 pyramid takes care of your goals, including some ongoing behaviours that will help you achieve them  It doesn’t cover everything though!  To support your pyramids, also make daily to-do lists  A daily to-do list will help you organise your day-to-day life as well as help you work towards your pyramid goals

Now you try!  Try setting yourself goals using the Bay Method  Use the example to help you  You can use multiple pyramids to set yourself more than one big goal
