They are used to control the flow of current and provide precise voltages. Values are in Ω, kΩ and MΩ. Their accuracy, or tolerance, is measured as a percentage deviation from the exact ideal value that they should be. They have a power rating – the maximum amount of power that they can dissipate.

Four and five band codes are in common use. Other resistor types have values written on them.
