Thursday, October 22 nd ■ Get out your notebook and a writing utensil ■ Balance the following equation:  C 4 H 10 + O 2 → CO 2 + H 2 O

Types of Reactions ■ There are 5 main types of chemical reactions ■ Synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, and combustion

Synthesis ■ Simple addition ■ A + B → AB ■ H 2 + O 2 → H 2 O

Decomposition ■ Opposite of synthesis ■ AB → A + B ■ PCl 5 → PCl 3 + Cl 2

Single Replacement ■ A compound and an element react to form a different combination of element/compound ■ Usually solid metal + aqueous ionic compound ■ A + BC → AC + B ■ HCl + Zn → ZnCl 2 + H 2

Double Replacement ■ Two ionic compounds rearrange to form two new ionic compounds ■ AX + BY → AY + BX ■ Ca(NO 3 ) 2 + HCl → CaCl 2 + HNO 3

Combustion (boom) ■ A hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen to form carbon dioxide and water ■ C 3 H 8 + O 2 → H 2 O + CO 2

States of Matter ■ (s) ■ (l) ■ (g) ■ (aq)

HONClBrIF ■ H 2 ■ O 2 ■ N 2 ■ Cl 2 ■ Br 2 ■ I 2 ■ F 2

Writing Chemical Equations ■ Solid magnesium reacts with aqueous hydrochloric acid (hydrogen chloride) to form aqueous magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas. ■ Write the chemical equation for this reaction

Today’s task//tomorrow’s quiz ■ Front: balance each chemical equation and classify it ■ Back: writing and interpreting chemical equations ■ Tomorrow’s quiz – you should be able to – Balance chemical equations – Classify chemical equations into their reaction types – Translate a chemical equation into a sentence – Read a sentence describing a chemical equation and write an balanced equation reflecting it
