Presented by: George Elias MULTISITE COLLABORATION TOOLS

 Purpose  History  Types of collaboration tools  Synchronous – Asynchronous  The Kiel approach  Web 2.0 OVERVIEW

 Collaborate: to work jointly with others or together especially in an intellectual endeavor (Merriam- Webster)  Created as tools to support groups of people working towards the same goal  Simplify tasks in an organization  Schedule and manage projects  Create a unified and more efficient work group PURPOSE

 Douglas Engelbart first envisioned collaborative computing in 1951  Founded field of human-computer interaction  1970s, the Electric Information Exchange System was created  Early asynchronous collaboration tool  1980s, Groupware was introduced  “Computer-based systems that support groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment.” HISTORY

Can be classified in different ways  Asynchronous  Email  Online calendars  IM  Time trackers  Spreadsheets  Synchronous  Video call  Video conference  Teleconference  Communication  E-mail  IM  Video call  Coordination  Online calendars  Time trackers  Spreadsheets  Cooperation  Video conference  Teleconference TYPES OF COLLABORATION TOOLS

 Asynchronous  These types of tools do not operate in real time  Does not require all parties involved to be present  Ex. Email: can send at any time, can respond at anytime  Synchronous  Operates in real time  Requires all parties to be involved at once  Ex. Video Conference: All parties involved are “synchronized” and present at the same time contributing to the discussion SYNCHRONOUS VS ASYNCHRONOUS

 Communication  Allows for exchange of information and ideas from one person to another  Coordination  Management of individuals, activities, and/or resources  Dominating perspective of collaboration  Cooperation  Production taking place in a shared environment  Making sure all progress is moving in the same direction THE KIEL APPROACH TO COLLABORATIVE SYSTEMS

 “Web 2.0 is the current state of online technology as it compares to the early days of the Web, characterized by greater user interactivity and collaboration, more pervasive network connectivity and enhanced communication channels.”(whatis.techtarget.com)  Traditionally, data was posted to websites and users would view the content  Web 2.0 more interactive and community based  Web 2.0 based groupware have shown to be more effective in communication and cooperation aspect of collaboration  Examples  Forums  Social Networking  Wikis WEB 2.0

 Most collaboration software we use today  Users can discuss ideas, edit files, etc.  Example  Samepage  Web based collaboration system WEB 2.0 BASED GROUPWARE

 Improved communication  Improved team management  Improved organization  Improved workflow  Increased productivity  Flexibility at work  Can work from home  Take work you  Mobile phones WHY USE COLLABORATION TOOLS?
