Applied Algebra B Lesson: 2 – 3 Adding Integers Objective: Learn to add integers.
2
Adding Integers Like Signs Add numbers and keep the sign 3 + 4 = 7 -6 – 8 = -14 Unlike Signs Subtract numbers, take the sign of the bigger number -4 + 11 = 7 5 – 13 = -8
3
Find each Sum 4 + 5 = 9 -6 + (-2) = -8 8 + 9 =17 6 + (-8) = -2 -4 + 9 = 5 -8 + 11 = 3
4
Find each Sum 5 + (-3) = 2 4 + (-6) = -2 -7 + 5 = -2 -2 - 4 = -6 -5 + (-10) = -15 11 + 6 =17
5
Opposites Also called Additive Inverses or Zero Pair Examples 3 & -3 3 + -3 = 0 or 3 – 3 = 0 -10 & 10 -10 + 10 = 0 or 10 – 10 = 0
6
Property Additive Inverse Property The sum of any number and its additive inverse is 0.
7
Simplify each expression 5x + (-3x) = 2x -8y + 3y = -5y 6m + 4m + (-2m) = 8m -5x + 4x = -x (or -1x)
