2 Remember Remember! Each quote/example has a picture to match it. 3 Asking Questions… Each table is going to be given pictures relating to war. Around each of the pictures, write down as many questions you can think of. Who? What? Where? Why? How? Will?

7 Can war ever be justified? Keyword: Justified Having a good or legitimate reason. In the 12 th Century a Christian theologian called St Thomas Aquinas began to put together what are now known as the Just War Principles. These principles were designed to decide whether a war can be considered justified. Before we look at Aquinas’ principles – what principles would you have? What would be your good enough reasons to go to war?

8 The Just War Principles Keyword: Justified Having a good or legitimate reason. Proper AuthorityWar should be declared by a proper authority e.g. government Just CauseThe war must be started for a good reason e.g. self defence, not for example, greed Right IntentionThe war must be fought to establish good and restore peace or fight evil Last ResortIt must be a last resort, all other options such as peace talks must have been tried ProportionalityThe amount of force should only be enough to succeed, no more Win PossibleIt should be possible to win the war Just MethodNo civilians should be involved with no unnecessary cruelty

9 The Just War Principles How can we remember the Just War Principles? One way of remembering lots of content is to create a mnemonic. For example: Poor Annie Just Couldn't Resist Ian's Latest Romantic Proposal Without Playing Jelly Marbles Proper Authority Just Cause Right Intention Last Resort Proportionality Win Possible Just Method Can anyone think of a better mnemonic?

10 The Just War Principles Test the person next to you – how many of the Just War Principles can you remember? Can you get them all AND explain what they mean?

11 Can war be justified? Think back to the pictures from the beginning of our lesson, the reasons for war and Aquinas’ Just War Principles… Can war ever be justified?
