2 The Ontario Construction Secretariat Who Are We The OCS was formed 16 years ago under the labour relations act of Ontario We represent the 25 unionized construction trades in both labour and management The OCS does work on behalf of both side in the areas of research, statistical analysis and apprenticeship promotion.

4 The Ontario Construction Secretariat Madewiththetrades.com is a site focusing on apprenticeship in the unionized skilled trades. All 25 are listed and requirements are attached to each trade. There is a student section, and another for parents and councilors. You can also go into the individual trades for information. There are also links to the trade web sites. There is a video link based on the DVD of the same name.

6 The Ontario Construction Secretariat What is Future Building Future Building is a 3 day career exposition designed to introduce young people to the world of the unionized construction trades. Both labour and management careers. The target audience is students from grade 7 – 12, youth at risk, aboriginal youth and those in career transition. 75% of the displays are interactive, hands on. Displays are designed to show both the management and skilled trades side of construction. Outside of the 25 unionized trades participants include WSIB, CSOA, Aboriginal Apprenticeship through Wii-ni n’guch-tood LDM, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Education, Skills Ontario, Service Canada and Employment Ontario.

7 The Ontario Construction Secretariat Why Do We Produce Future Building Current reports indicate there is a need for skilled trades people across the country. By 2016 there will be a need for over 74,000 workers to replace those retiring and to meet construction demands. Changing attitudes towards the unionized construction sector. Create an awareness and to educate teachers, councilors and parents of what is required to become involved in the construction sector and leave them with a positive image of the unionized construction sector. We need to show careers in construction as a viable alternative to other post secondary pathways.
