1 Poetry Is... a form of writing that allows the writer to express his/her thoughts creatively and in verse

2 Poetry Types Most poems are either lyric poems or epic poems.
Epic Poems—tell a story, has characters Can be a few stanzas or hundreds of pages Lyric Poems—express a speaker’s thoughts and feelings usually short and musical

3 Poetry Terms Line—a group of words together on one line of a poem
Stanza—a group of lines arranged together (like a paragraph, sometimes called a verse)

4 From Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face
by Jack Prelutsky Be glad your nose is on your face, not pasted on some other place, for if it were where it is not, you might dislike your nose a lot. Imagine if your precious nose were sandwiched in between your toes, that clearly would not be a treat, for you'd be forced to smell your feet. Your nose would be a source of dread were it attached atop your head, it soon would drive you to despair, forever tickled by your hair.

5 Stanzas Couplet = a two line stanza

6 REFRAIN A sound, word, phrase or line repeated regularly in a poem.

15 Limerick A five-line poem, usually meant to be funny.
Lines 1, 2, and 5 rhyme with one another and have the same number of syllables (usually 8- 10) Lines 3 and 4 rhyme with one another and have the same number of syllables (usually 5- 7)

whose dad never taught him to swim. He fell of a dock and sunk like a rock. And he was never heard from again.

17 Cinquain A Cinquain is a five-line poem that expresses one image or thought. Line 1- Two Syllables Line 2- Four Syllables Line 3- Six syllables Line 4- Eight Syllables Line 5- Two Syllables

19 Acrostic Poems An acrostic poem uses the letters in a topic word to begin each line. All lines of the poem should relate to or describe the topic word. Formed by writing a word vertically down the page, with only one letter per line. Use capital letters for starting each line. Each line of poetry must begin with the letter on that line and must pertain to the word. You can use one word or phrase for each line, and each doesn’t have to rhyme. Simply use adjectives and phrases that describe the word.

21 Diamante Poetry A Diamante poem is a poem in the shape of a diamond, using seven lines. It does not have to rhyme but each line uses specific types of words like adjectives and -ing words. It can be about one topic or two opposite topics.

22 Diamante Formula Line 1- one word subject (noun)
Line 2- Two adjectives describing Line 1 Line 3-Three participles ending in “ing” or “ed” to describe Line 1 Line 7-one word growing out of or opposite to Line 1 noun (another name) Line 6-two adjectives describing Line 7 Noun Line 5-Three participles ending in “ing” or “ed” to describe Line 7 Line 4- Four words (two related to the noun in Line 1 and two related to the noun in Line 7)

24 Biographical Poems A biographical poem is a poem that tells about yourself.

27 Can’t wait until the last day
