3 V-E Day: Victory in Europe Battle of the Bulge - Hitler launches a counter-attack against Allied forces in the West; – Allied forces fight back and close in on Berlin; April 12, 1945 – President Roosevelt dies in office and Harry Truman becomes President April 25, 1945 – the Soviets surround Berlin; April 29, 1945 – Hitler commits suicide; May 7, 1945 – Eisenhower accepts Germany’s unconditional surrender May 9, 1945 – Surrender is officially signed – V-E Day celebrated

4 Post-War Rebuilding Yalta Conference (Feb., 1945) – The “Big Three” discuss the rebuilding of post-war world. They agree to: – The division of Germany in to four occupation zones; – Stalin promises free elections in Poland and other Soviet-occupied countries; – Stalin agrees to join war against Japan;

6 Post-War Rebuilding, cont. The Nuremburg Trials – 24 surviving Nazi leaders are put on trial for crimes against humanity and war crimes; – 12 of the 24 are sentenced to death and most of the remaining were sent to prison – Individuals are responsible for their own actions, even in times of war. “Just following orders” is not a defense!!!
