Sudbury Primary School Class Teachers – Mr Webber (Year Leader), Ms McLeod, Mrs James and Miss Morjaria Teaching & Learning Support - Mr Hirani Teaching Assistants – Mrs Adni, Mrs. Lowe and Mrs. Rahmathullah Welcome to Year 1

Working together in harmony to develop confident, well-educated learners with healthy minds and bodies, who are independent, resilient, motivated and committed to lifelong learning

Creating harmony through: RESPECT – Respecting diversity, showing tolerance and valuing individuals. RESPONSIBILITY – Being accountable for and reflecting on one’s actions and decisions. INTEGRITY – Being honest, trustworthy and courageous to do the right thing. COMPASSION – Caring through our actions and words, tempered with fairness and justice for all. HUMILITY – The courage to admit when one is wrong, admit when one does not know the answer, and recognise when one’s ideas are not always the best. Schools are required to demonstrate how we tackle extremism and promote community cohesion. Our values are shared concepts amongst all religions, showing our children that although we are all different, we all share principles. We actively show children that all beliefs and cultures have equal value. Each year we visit different places of worship (including our Year 3 Christmas assembly in St Andrew’s church) and encourage all children to attend. We invite visitors from different faith groups to speak to the children about their beliefs. International evening. The countries project. RE & Collective Worship lessons. National & European Union Flags. We are a multi-faith school and love to learn and understand each others ideas and beliefs. We need your support in ensuring our children grow up learning to show respect to the beliefs of others.

Year 1 Curriculum Core skills of Maths and Literacy will be taught, where possible, through the thematic curriculum. Maths Mastery is a new approach of teaching Maths according to the new National Curriculum – Workshop to follow with Mrs James. Children will also be taught by specialist teachers during the week. This includes Drama, French, P.E., Art and Music. There will be visits and trips to enhance our thematic curriculum during the year. Useful information on how to support your child in reading, particularly comprehension will be given out on Friday.
13
Phonics Essential part of our curriculum and a foundation to get your child reading and spelling words correctly. Phonics Check expected to take place in June 2016. By the end of Reception, children should be able to write one grapheme for each of the 44 phonemes. Handout on Friday. In Year 1, they will start to explore vowel digraphs and trigraphs (a group of three letters that makes a single sound, like 'igh' as in ‘fight') further. They will begin to understand, for example, that the letters ‘ea’ can make different sounds in different words (dream and bread). They will also learn that one sound might be represented by different groups of letters: e.g., light and pie (igh and ie make the same sound). Useful Website: www.phonicsplay.co.ukwww.phonicsplay.co.uk Workshop to follow in the Autumn term.
14
Year 1 Expectations Please ensure that your child is well rested and ready to learn each day. Please support your children for about 10-15 minutes at home daily, as well as reading daily for about 10 minutes. Remember that home learning should be fun learning – do a jigsaw together, build a Lego model, make up a puppet show, read books, write about things they are interested in, etc. Help your child to learn their spellings, key words and phonemes (sounds). Parents Evenings will take place in both the Autumn and Spring terms.
15
Get involved with your child’s learning Workshops - Year 1 will be carrying out workshops over the school year to show what we are doing in class and also to give ideas of possible activities that you can use at home. Reading – books will be going home weekly. Remember to ask your child questions to develop comprehension skills and write down their thoughts about the book in their red reading records weekly – all children can start writing themselves. We will be sending out a guide sheet to support you with reading and questioning on Friday. See Example Homework – will be given every Friday and it needs to be handed in by Wednesday at the latest. They should complete homework in their own homework books. Specialist teachers may give homework, which will need to be handed in during the following lesson. In line with our homework policy, we will check but not mark homework. Please ensure children look after their homework books. Cursive Handwriting – Expectation across the school. We practise in the classroom and please practise at home as well.
16
School Rules 1. Follow instructions immediately. 2. Keep your hands, feet & objects to yourself. 3. Always use a quiet voice. 4. Work hard & put your hand up if you need help. 5. Call everyone by their correct name.

Learning Behaviour We expect all children to be attentive and listening when people are talking to them. Learning behaviour involves good posture when sitting, keeping your hands to yourself and not disturbing others. Our Sudbury Learning Powers support and encourage positive learning behaviour.

Reminders Children should have water in a labelled bottle for the classroom, separate from their lunchbox. Hot School Dinners – Remember all children in Year 1 are entitled to a free school dinner, therefore no children need to bring a packed lunch. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you want them to have a packed lunch. Birthdays – if you would like to bring in a treat to celebrate your child’s birthday, please make sure that it is individually wrapped – not a cake. Label ALL personal belongings including coats, jumpers, PE kit and shoes. P.E. Kit – black/grey/navy shorts/jogging bottoms, white t-shirt, plimsolls and jumper/sweatshirt. P.E. takes place twice a week – it is an important part of the curriculum and your child’s development. Ensure you know which days your child has a P.E. lesson. Book Bags – Need to be in every day with child’s reading record and book.
