US IOOS Modeling Testbed Leadership Teleconference May 3, 2011 Shelf Hypoxia John Harding, Northern Gulf Institute jharding@ngi.msstate.edu 228-688-3626 Project Leads: Rob Hetland (TAMU), Katja Fennel (Dalhousie), Jerry Wiggert (USM)

Outcomes and Scientific Insights Gained (1/2) Science Insights –Four panel animations reveal differences in freshwater inflow treatment in diselected model formulations(especially HYCOM) (Hetland) –Lagrangian tracking tools/ animations reveal source of seasonally developing hypoxic water from 100 m isobath upwelling (Lipphardt/ Fennel)

Outcomes and Scientific Insights Gained (2/2) Support by and integration with Cyberinfrastructure effort –CY 04-08 bio-geochemical data set delivered to CI (Fennel/Howlett) –Complete NOAA CSDL Model Output to SURA Server (Patchen/Howlett) –Provide input on server side processing (Lipphardt/ Howlett) –Provide input on Obs & model output list (Hetland/ Howlett) –Eoin Howlett participation at Shelf Hypoxia MAR Face-to-Face (Howlett) Describe working partnerships with Federal operational entities NAVO OPTEST Model Evaluation Tools Delivered to USM (Bub/Wiggert) CY 04-08 bio-geochemical data set delivered to NODC (Fennel/Garcia) Navy AMSEAS, USEAST, Fukushima & Sendai real-time outputs to NCEP and NGI/NCDDC EDAC/ OceanNOMADS (Bub, Cross, Ming Ji, Signell, Harding) NGI/ NCDDC developmental EDAC/ OceanNOMADS redesigned. Redesign to be adopted for operational EDAC/ OceanNOMADS (Harding/ Cross)

Summarize Testbed Products Completed by June Data Sets, Tools, Papers, … –Consolidated Biogeochemical data set for northern Gulf (Fennel) –NAVO AMSEAS, USEast, Fukishima, & Sendai archived prediction system output available via OpenDAP on EDAC/OceanNOMADS –NGI/ NCDDC OceanNOMADS redesign (Harding) –Technical Report on AMSEAS COAMPS forcing compared to buoy winds (Fitzpatrick) –Xu, J., W. Long, J. D. Wiggert, L. W. J. Lannerolle, C. W. Brown, R. Murtugudde, and R. R. Hood, Climate Forcing and Salinity Variability in the Chesapeake Bay, USA, Estuaries and Coasts, accepted. * * Interaction with Estuarine Hypoxia Group

Anticipated Progress During NCE (Jun-Dec) Completion and documentation of coupled hindcast hydrodynamic runs. Meeting preparation & Attendance ( Hetland) Completion and documentation of coupled hindcast biogeochemical runs. Meeting preparation & Attendance ( Fennel) Completion and documentation of pre-operational AMSEAS evaluation. Meeting preparation & Attendance (Wiggert) Project oversight, final documentation, meeting preparation & attendance (Harding) –~8% Harding (Include estimated effort of team members who are carrying over funds)

Challenges to Progress and Lessons Learned Challenges –Aquiring post-docs & other technical labor –Getting initial and subcontract funding in place in timely manner Lessons Learned –Don’t underestimate time required for communication & coordination of multiple, dispersed participants and program office –Do allow sufficient time in program plans for contractual implementation delays –Don’t volunteer, Don’t panic

How Can TAEG Help You? How can SURA Mgmt Help You? Need for NCE through Feb 2012 to cover AMS & Ocean Science Mtg travel?
