THE WALKING TOUR Peter Shields 036450062 TRT100-TB

Hi I’m Peter, and Welcome to my Tour of Toronto!!

1. Union Station

Though the “New” site that we know today has been operational since 1927, Union Station has been around since the late 1800’s. Here I am in front of the clock within the main terminal, below is the VIA Rail departure board. Not only does Union Station take care of VIA Riders, it also caters to TTC and GO Riders. As well as a free shuttle to Vaughan Mills Mall and the Billy Bishop Airport for Porter Flyers.

Rogers Centre

Rogers Centre, home of the Blue Jays and the Argonauts. Here I am below “The Audience”, a gold painted sculpture created by Michael Snow to make the façade of this very incredible stadium more appealing. As a WWE fan, Rogers Centre appeals to me as I was one of over 69,000 who witnessed Hulk Hogan vs. The Rock when the venue hosted WrestleMania X8 (18) in April of 2002.

Princess of Wales Theatre

One in a handful of theatre complexes owned and operated by Mirvish Productions in Toronto, the Princess of Wales has miraculous history hosting incredible stage productions. Here’s me at the front doors of this historic juggarnaut. I, as a kid, saw Cats at this theatre and this fall you can watch a classic come to life in Les Miserables starting in Late September/Early October.

Roy Thomson Hall

When I was a child, I came to Roy Thomson Hall to watch the Orchestra with my fifth grade class. My teacher called it a “Volcano of Sound”, when you look at the Hall it resembles a volcano. Used for orchestras and classical music, Roy Thomson Hall is a beautifully designed venue. Here I am standing just past the main doors near the fountain. This November if you love the cello, go see Yo-Yo Ma, live at the venue. It is a very special presentation and I know it will not disappoint.

Nathan Phillips Square

Nathan Phillips Square is the courtyard/outdoor entertainment venue that is overshadowed by City Hall. Inside Nathan Phillips, you can skate in the winter, or enjoy some “street meat” from the many food vendors parked along Queen Street. I am here standing along the fountain where it is surrounded by Chinese New Year statues – notice the dragon and rabbit on either side of me.

Old city hall war monument

This building behind me is old city hall before the new one was constructed next door. Out front, where I am standing, lies a monument saluting our troops of all generations. On the very front of this staple of history is a message that states: “to our glorious dead”. As a man with military in my family – my uncle and cousin are in the army – this was truly touching for me to see and learn about.

Field of Cows

Behind the TD Building lays a court that has a space of green grass and metal cows. I know sounds farfetched at first, but is really a legitimate sight. Here I am standing behind one of them, trying to be careful not to wake her up. Don’t want her milk to go sour, or for her to beat the lactose out of me.

TD Canada Trust Bank

One of the four main banks around the Financial District of Toronto, I chose to stand with this bank because it seemed right. Knowing that my personal bank is BMO, I really didn’t feel up to posing a picture with a mural showing off those no talent bums from Toronto FC. Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment LTD…you give me a headache!

King Edward Hotel

It may be one of Toronto’s oldest hotels, however it still brings in the business. Located just east of the Entertainment District’s core, it has been a historical yet very pricey place to stay for visitors to our great city. People can even enjoy a evening of fine dining and live music at Tom Jones’ Steak House just around the corner.

The Flatiron Building

The Flatiron building is a small, oddly shaped building in and around the St. Lawrence Market area of Toronto. On the back lays a mural – the one I am standing in front of. It may look like a bunch of windows being unveiled within a wall of windows, however what you see is intended to be a mirror image of the Perkins Building.

Brookfield Place

Brookfield Place is a building/retail area within Toronto’s downtown area. Not only is it home to many great restaurants like the Marketplace, it is also the hosting building of one of my favorites, the Hockey Hall of Fame. Here I am completing my tour of Toronto over the floodlights underneath the glass archways of the buildings interior main concourse.
