2. Rights and Freedoms Rights – The ability to conduct one's affairs without the interference of the government. Example: The right to privacy without the police being able to bust in your home Freedoms – A legal, moral or social entitlement due to all human beings because they are human beings. Example: The freedom to think whatever you want to think as long as it does not hurt another person.

3. Notwithstanding Clause What is it? Clause built into the charter that allows for governments to ignore a law and make a new law that suits the needs of the government. Sometimes this can go against the Charter. So what can be over-ridden in the Charter? Fundamental freedoms, legal rights, and equality rights. Portions of the Charter that cannot be over- ridden are the democratic rights, equality rights and mobility rights.

4. Notwithstanding Clause This clause is only temporary. Only good for 5 years. As soon as the 5 years is up the legislation is no good unless the clause is used again by the government.

5. Take some time with your partner to come up with a definition of the Notwithstanding Clause. Write this in your notes

6. Take a second to turn to page 598 of your textbooks to read Section 1 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Take a second to ponder what that statement means. Focus on the term Reasonable limits.

7. Reasonable Limits Greek to me? What does this mean to me? This means that we have constitutionally guaranteed rights that could not be taken away from us unless the government has a good reason to take them away from a person.
