1 Wax loss based on the color of the candle.
Candles ! Wax loss based on the color of the candle.

2 Question: How does the color of a candle (red or white) affect how much wax is lost after being lit for 2 hours ? MV: Color of candle (white or red) RV: How much wax is lost after lighting CV: Burn time (2 hours) CV: Size of candle CV: Length of the wick CV: Same brand of candle Hypothesis: If we change the color of the candle to red or white, then I think the white candle will burn more than the red candle because there is less dye and other components that could possibly interfere with the burn process

3 Materials: -3 white candles -3 red candles 2 hours of burn time Matches Procedure: Set up newspaper so dripping wax doesn’t ruin surface Place all candles spread evenly apart and light match carefully Light candle wick Make observations during 2 hours of burn time After 2 hours is over, blow out flame and let cool before weighing candles

4 RED Candles Average weight loss: .17 oz. Trial Number
Weight Before Lighting (oz) Weight After Lighting (oz.) Special notes & observations Difference between before and after weight 1 1.74 oz. 1.60 oz. Candle started burning out before all others .14 oz 2 1.49 oz. .25 oz. 3 1.62 oz. .12 oz. Average weight loss: .17 oz.

5 WHITE Candles Average weight loss: .87 oz. Trial Number
Weight Before Lighting (oz.) Weight After Lighting (oz.) Special notes & observations Difference between before and after weight 1 1.74 oz. 1.45 oz. .29 oz. 2 1.44 oz. .30 oz. 3 1.46 oz. .28 oz. Average weight loss: .87 oz.

6 {CONCLUSION} In this investigation, my hypothesis was correct. I said that if we change the color of the candle to red or white, then I think the white candle will burn more than the red candle because there is less dye and other components that could possibly interfere with the burn process. The data proved me correct. After 2 hours of burn time, the highest weight loss for the red candle was found in trial 2 with a .25 oz. difference between the beginning weight of the candle and the weight of the candle after burning. The lowest weight loss for the red candle was found in trial 3 with a .12 oz. difference between the beginning weight of the candle and the weight of the candle after burning. After 2 hours of burn time, the highest weight loss for the white candle was found in trial 2 with .30 oz. difference between the beginning weight of the candle and the weight of the candle after burning. The lowest weight loss for the white candle was found in trial 3 with .28 oz. difference between the beginning weight of the candle and the weight of the candle after burning. The average weight that was lost from the red candles was .17 oz. of wax. The average weight that was lost from the white candles was .87 oz. of wax. Therefore white candles burn faster than red ones.
