What is a chemical reaction? chemical reaction- when one or more substances changes into one or more new substances Two important key terms in a chemical reaction: 1) reactants- 2) products- the substance(s) that undergo change the new substance(s) that are formed Reactant + Reactant ----> Product

Writing/reading Chemical Equations Chemists use chemical equations describe what reactions are taking place by writing an equation Word equations are a simple list of: 1) reactant(s) 2) product(s) Rules of word equations: 2) reactant(s) are always to the LEFT 3) product(s) are always to the RIGHT 1) the reactants & products are separated by and arrow (means “yields”) 4) Use a + sign if there are more than one reactant or product

coefficient H 2 + O 2  2H 2 O subscript yield Multiply

Think of saying that there are TWO H 2 O’s H 2 + O 2  2H 2 O Subscript TELLS 2 H’s Coefficient x subscript Subscript TELLS 2 O’s TWO H 2 O’s = H 2 O + H 2 O Adding this way= 4 H’s and 2 O’s

1) What number represents the coefficient? 2) What number represents the subscript? 4) What element is represented by the letter H? 3) How many “H’s” do you have? 5 2 Hydrogen 5x2=10 5H 2 Answer a few questions about:

Most simple compounds only have 2words in their names Naming Chemical formulas Rules for simple compounds: 1. Write the 1 st elements original name 2. Write the 2 nd elements original name BUT change the suffix to “ide”

carbon + hydrogen= sodium + chlorine = aluminum + oxygen= Naming Binary Compounds Carbon hydroxide sodium chloride aluminium oxide

lithium+ oxygen= beryllium+ nitrogen= potassium + sulfur= aluminum + chlorine= Lithium + sulfur= magnesium + sulfur= You try… lithium oxide beryllium nitride potassium sulfide aluminum chloride lithium sulfide magnesium sulfide Naming Binary Compounds

Li + O= Al + Br = Ni + S = Fe + O = K + Cl = lithium oxide aluminum bromide nickel sulfide iron oxide potassium chloride Writing Binary Compounds You try…

Advanced Naming: Chart using chlorine

1) Carbon + (1) Oxygen = (1) Carbon + (2) Oxygen = (1) Carbon + (4) Chlorine = Advanced Naming Continued Carbon monoxide Carbon dioxide Carbon tetrachloride You try…
