Religion Ch.3 By: Grace O’Doherty
2
In the beginning... The disciples listened to God when Jesus died because the resurrection convinced them that he was the messiah and all that he taught about the church was true
3
The First Day Before Jesus ascended into heaven he promised his disciples he would send them the holy spirit to give them power and witness They waited, along with Mary, for nine days and then on Pentecost the holy spirit came to them in the form of wind and tongues of fire Then the disciples went out and began proclaiming his word
4
The Infant Church The church was made known to the world on Pentecost We are one in our faith, love, Eucharist, and prayer
5
First Modern Views Theologian: someone who studies the truth of our faith and tries to explain it better Avery Dulles proposed five ways to view the church Those five ways are: community, herald, sacrament, institution, and servant
6
Community We are social beings who like to be with other humans The church is a group of people who share their lives, and our bound together by their belief in Jesus and their desire to spread God’s will Their shared lives are a sign of the kingdom in the next world
7
Herald A herald is a messenger sent to announce things The gospel (good news) proclaims the message at church We will do anything to proclaim that god loves us, saves us, and calls us to be in the community of believers
8
Institution The church needs leaders to help run it smoothly therefore, they have ordained ministers The highest authority in the church is the Pope The pope is then joined by other bishops in leading the church The priests and deacons support the bishop in serving the community Priests ad deacons are appointed to a specific church or ministry by the bishop Bishops, priests, and deacons are all necessary for a church The church also has laws and traditions Specifically, the church has the Code of Cannon Law that covers all of the aspects of church life
9
Sacrament a sacrament is an outward sign that indicates an inner grace a sacrament is also an encounter with Christ The church is the sacrament of the trinity’s communion with the people
10
Servant Jesus’ most dramatic action of telling his followers that they must love each other took place at the last supper (the night before he died) It was when he washed and dried the feet of the apostles The church serves other by caring for their needs
