Drill: List some features of the worst storm that you have ever experienced. ( For Example: Wind? Rain? Snow? Season?)

Under Pressure Objective: -S.W.B.A.T. analyze weather data in order to describe weather patterns associated with high and low pressure systems. Homework: Air Pressure HW

Introduction When’s the last time you saw a really crazy storm? Was it thundering and lightening?Maybe you asked yourself what causes storms.Today we are going to look at weather patterns and try to figure out what kind of atmospheric pressure is needed to create storms.

Analyzing a Weather Map  You will be placed into groups to analyze a weather map.  Pay attention to the symbols on the map.  Create a chart to predict what each symbol, number, or line means.

Class Discussion What do these symbols mean?

What Do You Notice?

Getting to Know Our Symbols  We are going to focus on the L and H found on our weather maps.We will look at the other symbols later.  You are going to read information from the following website: http://weatherworksinc.com/high-low-pressure to learn all about what the H and L mean on your weather chart.

Reading  As you read, make sure you are focusing on the H and L symbols and what they mean.Take notes as you read! Page 29 H What it means: Type of weather: Picture of the weather: L What it means: Type of weather: Picture of the weather:

Looking Back At Our Map Glue in the map. Draw arrows to represent the air flow around each "H" and "L" on the map (refer to reading). Then, describe what kind of weather would be expected at the blue and red stars.

 Susie lives in Maryland and has a friend in Florida. Susie is stuck indoors because it is raining, but her friend is enjoying a sunny day at the beach.  Draw pressure symbols on the weather map to show the pressure in Maryland and Florida.  Underneath the weather map, write a weather forecast that might be broadcast on TV for each location. Page 28 Weather Map

Assessment  Complete the Exit Slip and turn in!  Answer in complete sentences!
