COMPANY DETAILS Neyveli Lignite Corporation is one of the major public sector company in India and largest in south. The Corporation was interested with the task of implementing the integrated Lignite Project comprising the open cast mines and Thermal Station.

The central workshop maintenance yard for all concerns of Neyveli Lignite Corporation enterprise viz., Mine-I, Thermal power station-I, fertilizer unit, and carbonization plant. A FEW IMPORTANT JOBS CARRIED OUT ARE MANUFACTURING AND RECONTIONING OF DRIVE SHAFTS OF B.W.E’S AND CONVEYORS MACHINING OF LARGE GEAR BOX HOUSINGS. RECONDITIONING OF HOLLOW SHAFTS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS. MANUFACTURING OF 20”DIA PLAIN PIPES AND SLOTTED PIPES.

AIM To fabricate the maximum diameter(380mm) holding steady rest with perfect design for main aspects. To avoid the delivery time and new part purchasing. To reduce the downtime of the rework part adopted machines

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM 304 nos. of important jobs like drive shafts, conveyor idler rollers, cam wheel housing, hollow shafts etc are machined in heavy duty lathes like vertical turret and Lehmann lathes. They are unable to complete all the jobs on time. Due this job deliver time increased. Delay in allocation of these jobs due to non availability of machines. Non availability of suitable steady rest in medium duty lathes for loading jobs.

REASON FOR CHOOSE THIS TITLE Company steady rest available for medium duty Bombay lathe is maximum 180mm diameter job holding capacity. Mines department purchased new part when the rework delayed. so we are decide to make the new steady rest for Bombay lathe to increase the job holding capacity(180mm to 380mm) and reduce the job setting time.

METHODOLOGY Basically steady rest is one of the jig and fixture of lathe. It reduces the vibration and eccentricity of job at the time of various operations in lathe. And also one of the support of the job. The steady size is depends upon the lathe bed width. its size is not exceed to lathe bed width. The steady rest used to holding the job and it is not affected the job rotation and surface of the job.
