Chemical Reactions

Review: Chemical vs Physical Change Physical Change: when the matter stays the same, but there is a change in size, shape, or appearance. Chemical Change: a change where the matter changes to a different kind of matter.

Chemical Reactions A chemical reaction is a process that rearranges the atoms of one or more substances into one or more new substances.

In every chemical change, new substances are formed. These new substances are called products of the chemical change. The starting substances are called the reactants of the chemical change.

A word equation shows both the reactants and the products of a chemical change: Reactants -> Products

Guided Practice Baking soda + vinegar ---> carbon dioxide What are the reactants? What is the product?

2H 2 + O 2 ---------> 2H 2 O What are the reactants? What are the products?

2Fe + O 2 --------------> 2FeO What are the reactants? What are the products?

Form a chemical equation 2 H2 and O2 combine to make 2H2O. 2 H2 + O2  2H2O

Form a chemical equation ATP, CO2 and H2O are made from glucose and O2. Glucose + O2  ATP + CO2 + H2O
