1 Lesson 2a: We will learn about the policy of appeasement and how it allowed Hitler to gain control in Europe. Appease (verb) – the action of satisfying or appeasing someone to make them happy by giving into their demands instead of having to deal with them. Example: The parent appeased the child by giving him a cookie every time he cried and shouted. 1. Why did the parent give the child a cookie? 2. How is the parent giving the child a cookie an example of appeasement? 3. What is a possible consequence of the parent’s actions?

2 1. Over three million Germans lived in Czechoslovakia in 1938. Hitler planned an attack to restore the “Sudetenland” to Germany. Prime Minister of England Neville Chamberlain made a trip to Germany. 2. Chamberlain, Daladier (France), Mussolini & Hitler signed the Munich Agreement giving the Sudetenland to Germany without a fight. 3. Chamberlain hoped this would make Hitler happy and avoid war. 4. Hitler still invaded Czechoslovakia and had his eyes set on Poland.
