This could be either a stage or an experience that can affect the behaviour or development of a child or young person. Not all transitions are experienced by all children and young people.

Common transitions All children and young people will experience: ●being left with someone other than the parent/primary carer ●changing school ●puberty.

Less common transitions These transitions may only occur for a smaller number of children and young people: ●Death or serious illness of a loved one ●Separation or divorce of parents ●Their own serious illness ●Their best friend moving away

Effects of transitions Children struggling to deal with transitions may display extreme reactions such as: ●anger ●withdrawal ●panic ●confusion ●regression to an earlier developmental stage.

Supporting transitions Practitioners faced with a child or young person struggling to deal with a transition should: ●understand and respect the child’s feelings ●show concern and support the child and their family ●explain things using appropriate language ●seek outside help if necessary ●ensure confidentiality is maintained.
