What are the themes of your book? Brutality of war; Many of the young men were emotionally and physically ruined by war. Nationalism; Dedication to one’s homeland. Unity; All soldiers and everyone working together. Animalism; The soldiers are compared to animals a lot and share many things with the soldiers.

How have your views changed after reading this book? One view of mine this book has changed was my view on war. I never knew war was as traumatizing as it really is. This book does a great job of showing things how they really were during war times.

What fascinates you about the culture(s) presented in this book? What fascinates me about the cultures in this book, is that many things about it are referred to. Plato, whom is a very famous ancient philosopher is referred to.

What is the main conflict in this book? Is it external or internal? In what ways does the culture presented in this book affect the conflict or problem? The main conflict of this book is that Paul (the main character) decides that war is pointless, and he and his friends are fighting for absolutely nothing. The conflict is external and internal because, they are in war, and they are deciding if it is right or not. The war is also causing emotional problems for the young men.

If you were the main character in this book, how would you have handled the conflict or problem? If I was the main character in this book, I would have felt the same way as Paul. He felt the war was useless, and he lost a friend from it. He no longer wanted to be a part of it.
