Evaluating factors influencing attitude to eating A02 STARTER – 5 mins 1.Name 1 factor that influences attitudes to food and eating behaviour. 2.Name 1 study showing this influence. Think, pair, share Learning Objectives ALL will know evaluation points about factors that affect attitudes to food. ALL will begin to understand how to plan for an essay question in Unit 3. HOT QUESTION How could you criticise this factor?

Identify the factor

Learning outcomes Identify factor that influence attitudes to eating Research in pairs evaluation points for each factor and complete the worksheet. Teach other groups by filling out the flip chart mind map on the wall. Plan an essay question

Social Learning - Parenting Brown and Ogden (2004) - consistent correlations between parents and children for eating motivation, eating snacks, and body dissatisfaction. Birch (1999) Parent’s technique to use food as a reward for eating a healthy option first has LT negative effect. Overt vs covert parental control of diet A01

Social learning - Media Media has a huge impact on affecting people’s attitudes about food and healthy eating – MacIntyre et al (1998) A01

Ethnicity Research suggests body dissatisfaction and related eating concerns/eating disorders are more common in white women than black and Asian Women (Powell & Khan 1995). Ball and Kenardy (2002) 14 thousand women between the ages of 18 and 23 in Australia. For all ethnic groups the longer time spent in Australia the more women reported attitudes and eating behaviour similar to women born in Australia. AO1

Social Class Studies have found body dissatisfaction and dieting is more common in higher-class individuals. Dornbusch et al (1984) survey 700 Americans teenagers and found higher class females had a greater desire to be thin and were more likely to diet. Scottish Health survey (2003) Income was positively associated with healthy eating (Goode et al 2008) AO1

Mood Garg et al (2007) – 38 watched sad or happy film. 36% more popcorn eaten in sad film. (this dropped with prior knowledge of fat and calories!) Negative mood leads to binging (Davis et al 1988) in bulimics. Wegner et al (2002) binges common on low mood days but no difference before and after in mood. A01

AO2 research pairs Read the hand out and identify evaluation points for the factor you have been given. Complete the relevant section on your worksheet. Josephine & Nacera – Social learning Parleen & Becca – Ethnicity Aaron & Muneer – Social Class Layla & Trishan - Mood Karimah – Cultural difference, generalisability and gender bias. A02 5 mins

Flip chart Using your research create a display on your A02 point stick on the wall. You have 5 minutes to do this. Prepare to teach the rest of the class about your factor so they can fill out their sheet. 10 mins

Social Learning Social learning theory ignores biological factors. Deterministic Passive not active human being (no free will) Evolutionary theory suggests preference for fatty and sweet foods is a direct result of an evolved adaptation Supportive study by Meyer and Gast (2008) on impact of peers to eating. A02

Evaluation of Mood Parker et al (2006) chocolate is more likely to prolong rather than alleviate the negative mood the eater is in What about non-clinical eaters-those who don’t have a eating problem that has been diagnosed? We can’t generalise to those people as that would be nomothetic Mood is an individual and subjective feeling – how can we test mood? Is one film going to create the same feeling in all of us? Self perception/reporting only.. A02

Evaluation of Culture What about the acculturation effect? (Ball and Kenardy, 2002) Mumford et al (1991) incidence of bulimia greater among Asian school girls than White school girls Story et al (1995) sample of American students – higher social class was related to greater satisfaction with weight than lower classes A02

Overall Evaluation Points Men’s attitudes to eating behaviour are under researched. All the focus on women. Homosexuality may have a link to eating disorders (Siever 1994). Moral panic? Clinical/subclinical groups and cultural differences and Rozin et al (1999) affecting generalisability Too much in media e.g. Jamie Oliver, salt campaign. A02

IDA’s In unit 3 the mark scheme requires evidence of IDAs to achieve high marks. Issues Validity; ethics; animal bias; sample bias; gender/cultural/historical bias. Debates Nature vs Nurture; Determinism vs free will; Reductionalist vs Wholeism. ApproachesBiological, Behaviourist, Cognitive, Psychodynamic.

Task – Essay Question Plan – 10/15 minutes – use essay guide. ‘Discuss attitudes to food and/or eating behaviour’ (8 + 16) Think about the AO1, AO2/3 points Plan out the number of paragraphs and what you would write in each paragraph. 8 + 16 questions require 1/3 A01 2/3 A02 – a lot of evaluation! Next lesson you will do a timed essay.

Compare your plan. Do you have enough Ao2? How many paragraphs AO1? How many paragraphs AO2? Which factors have you selected to write about? Do you have too many factors or too few? Have you included IDAs?

Homework Research different types of diets. Write up a 1 page summary sheet about each type of diet you have found. Next lesson we will be looking at dieting and what makes a diet likely/unlikely to be successful.

Plenary – give me an evaluation point
